Grandparent 529 and divorce / shared cost of college

Exactly. Why does your Ex need to know anything about how your share is financed?

I’d also expect my child to not be a twit and if it made it was not possible for the other parent to cover their portion they would proceed with grace.

OP here. This seems right to me. Ex has well off parents who are still alive and spend differently than my dad did(like they paid for half of ex’s house so ex can make less and still live well and pay for a lot of family vacations but they don’t have accounts for kids/grandkids). So using the 529 money for my share wouldn’t prevent my kids from going where they want or drive ex to the poorhouse, but would allow me to save more of my own income.

It’s really crummy. It should be college funds then parent split. Lots of grandparents can and don’t help with college. Mine could help and never so much has done a birthday gift let alone much else. Have your kids go to cheaper schools so neither pays anything.

For example, I remarried a military man. His GI bill is not helping my ex with his share of costs. No way.

His military benefits cover your kids in terms of health care and other perks.
