City Sporting Club

Lots of thoughts about a club that’s only a couple years old!

OP, if your kid is really young, U12 and younger, City Sporting is good for technical development. Don’t expect to win so perhaps also put ur kid on a rec-level team, maybe a neighborhood or school team if they want to win or play in scenarios where they can win. Very easy to win when playing kickball.

I think what happened here is that a coach or zealous parent wanted to start a thread to talk about their club by answering their own post. And it didn't go as planned. Looks like they got one or two in there, though.

This is OP and sorry the day got busy so I am just getting back to this. To add more info, my son is U14 and a good player but hasn't been playing travel for too long. He aims to play at ENCL or MLS next level...I'm not sure that's attainable but he is pretty good so I think its possible for him with hard work and the right training. So while he may or may not get there, a club that would give him the training and opportunities to reach that potential would be ideal. And yes, City practices would be pretty close to home for us which would be helpful with school schedules, etc. Thank you for all of the great feedback so far!

If he's U14 he needs to be in the MLS Next to ECNL pathway now, even if you go to one of those club where he might be 2nd or 3rd team now. If he hasn't been playing travel too long, what level is he at? Playing NCSL 1-2-3? EDP 1-2-3?

U14 is a good age group for City Sporting. They've recruited with their philosophy and have two strong age groups at this level. Started as a DC centric team, but I would guess this age group is 50-75% Southern Maryland/PG Close in recruited at this point. I'd ask the club about how they are positioning their 07s. Are they attending showcases or just local tournaments? With a rising 8thish grader, I'm assuming you are thinking about at least playing college soccer for fun.

Definitely does not.

If he's EDP 2/NL, he's already playing above both their 2010 teams

Their 2010 Reds went 4-3 in EDP VII
Their 2010 Blacks (who are very talented, highly recommend checking them out) won their EDP 4 division

+1. OP, in the spring, reach out to MLSNext and ECNL clubs and ask to practice with those teams. Even if he doesn’t get an offer, he’ll have an idea as to the level of play he needs to be at and can strive for that. Or he could impress at the practices and the spring tryouts will just be a formality.

So if City is convenient to you, I guess Maryland United, Achilles, Alexandria, Arlington, Bethesda are all good options.

Or, you can check out the 2010 teams in EDP I and reach out to practice at those clubs.

Thank you, that's good advice. And yes those clubs could mostly all work distance wise. Bethesda may be tough but it sounds like there are plenty of options.

OP, if you talk to Achilles try to nail down whether they'll have a U15 team in MLS Next next year. This year they do not. And, if you could report back, that would be awesome. . I have a U14 son too.

I guess unless everyone abandons ship, the current Achilles U14's will become next season's U15's

I think that's what last year's U14s (2009) thought.

Sorry. I wasn't trying to turn this into an Achilles thread. Good luck finding a club that's the best fit for your son.
