HS Graduation dates and locations

If they are in the same school, the school will be closed that day.

UMBC is far preferable to DAR which is small, impossible to park at and generally no longer a sufficient option. It was fine when my HS graduating class at Churchill was 350 students. My daughter's class at BCC is well over 500...things have changed. I am happy to drive to UMC. Plus B-CC will provide buses for the band kids, teachers, admin, and families who need transportation. I did not relish having to tell my parents they weren't invited because we only got 3 tickets.

Our school announced the day/location Dec. 8. Earlier, they had a survey about whether families would prefer it to be on-campus (at the HS) or at DAR. But the description of each option seemed very biased toward DAR. It will be at DAR. I would probably prefer UMC due to easier parking (I assume).

Anyone heard about WJ yet?

Rockville HS is also at UMBC. Can’t remember the date. I voted for at the school, but the survey notes that was the most expensive option and suggested parents would have to sacrifice a limb in order to fit, so I figured it was a lost cause.

Seneca Valley HS is too, and we had a similar survey.

Should be any day now. In 2021 they announced on 12/10 and in 2022 on 12/22

This is the message that every MCPS high school principal says about on-site graduation. I really don't understand why MoCo does not have an in-county facility that's capable of hosting our high school graduations. This is pathetic.

Wondering if other schools are also having to travel so far and if they are happy with locations. And curious if anyone has experienced a graduation at UMBC and what they thought of it.

Omg poor you

We go to DAR no complaints

Baltimore at least has tons of parking.

No it’s wasteful and big whoop one day

It should be at the schools themselves so all families could go bec it’s not easy for financially drained families

None of you are that so stop complaining

Hi, the schools are saying it's too expensive to have at the schools themselves. So you saying it should be at the schools is a moot point, because the school system is telling you the costs are cost-prohibitive. Also, outdoor graduations on-site at the school are weather dependent.

So you said no to a new facility in-county that would solve this problem for our high schools and also stated a preference for a solution the school has told you is fiscally and logistically cost-prohibitive.

You contributed nothing of substance to this conversation.

I have heard a lot of complaints about DAR, actually.

One option that has been overlooked is using Montgomery College. We went to their graduation last year, roughly a week before MCPS starts theirs. MC has a huge tent set up for their own graduation on their football field. Must’ve had at least 3000 seats just in half the tent. All the stage setup, back drop, video for broadcast stands, etc. The tent was set-up to host a reception at the back. Had A/C, nice portable restrooms outside. Tons of parking at the Rockville campus and close to metro.

I don’t understand why this isn’t used at least by the nearby high schools (RM, Rockville, Wooton). Surely a partnership would reduce costs for all.

Is your child a student at WJ? If they are, you should have received an email. All the principals gathered last Friday and they drew numbers to select the graduation date. Most principals emailed the dates to the senior families shortly after.

Doesn't WJ have an interim principal? Maybe they didn't realize what they were supposed to do?

RM's graduation is June 5 at UMBC. Happy about that.

My kids went to different HS and we pulled the other out. I did not ask but no one said a word. She went back for the afternoon.
