What science course did your college student take as a jr and sr in HS?

DS1
J: AP Physics 1
S: AP Bio and AP Chem

DS2
J: Honors Physics
S: AP Env Science

Kid interested in STEM (natural sciences, engineering, CS):
11th, AP Physics 1
12th, AP Physics C

Kid not interested in STEM:
11th, regular Physics
12th, random science electives or APES

If the student is aiming for highly selective schools, the rule of thumb is a year each of bio, chem, physics, and then choose one of AP Bio, AP Chem, or AP Physics C for senior year.

DE Indepedent Bio Study

Junior - AP Bio, Honors Chem
Senior - Honors Physics

adding that these kids are both at top 30 universities in non-stem majors.

Kid who went into college undecided (ended up an accounting major):

11th: Physics (honors)
12th: AP Environmental

Kid who went into college undecided (ended up English major intending on law school):

11th: Physics (honors)
12th: AP Chemistry

Not a stem kid

Anonymous wrote:For college admission what matters is what the HS offers and what other students at that HS take. Not some random people across various school districts.

But, sure here it goes:
Junior:
Magnet Physics (covered AP Physics 1 and half of AP Physics 2)
AP Calc BC
Magnet Integrative STEM
Magnet Biochemistry
Magnet Organic Chemistry

Senior:
AP Physics C & ME (one year - each segment covered in one semester)
AP Biology
Magnet Multivariable/Differential Equations
Magnet Microbiology
Magnet Analytical Chemistry
Magnet Marine Biology
Magnet Astronomy

NOTE: each year all 5 core classes were covered.

Your student took 10 classes senior year? How is that possible?

NP: most of the magnet classes are 1 semester and Blair has 9 periods so kids can take 8 classes per semester.

Some were semester classes. DC took 8 classes every year of HS.

We did the sequence which school recommended for all students. Nearly everyone also followed that recommendation. It happened to be Envi Sci, Biology, Chemsitry, then Physics. Physics is last in the sequence because they include use of Calculus in most Physics options.

Side bar, for a kid in Top 5% of class [ public high school] wants to go into CS, aiming for a top university, Asian male, how many core AP sciences that he needs ? He will be taking AP Physics 1 and Physics C. Should he also take AP Bio and AP Chem? He already took Honors/Advanced Bio and Honors/Advanced Chem

Kid 1 Currently a STEM major in college (changed focus from one STEM field to another first year)

Jr AP Enviro Sci
Sr. AP Bio

Kid 2 Currently a non-STEM major in college (never considered a STEM field)

Jr AP Enviro Sci
Sr AP Physics (did not take AP exam, wanted Honors Physics but that was not available--in hindsight considers this choice a mistake)

This looks super impressive on paper, as far as rigor is concerned. Test scores and ECs?

Honors not offered. DS did not want to take AP sciences. Admitted to one of the top SLACs in the country ED1.
