| Defensive driving. Be aware of cars not just directly in front of you, but also merging in from the sides, and glancing in the rear view every once in a while. Leave a lot of space in front of you, even if that means cars will cut in front of you - it's OK, worth the price if it prevents you from being scammed. |
| Are you driving obnoxiously slow? I’ve never seen anyone swerve and slam brakes for no reason, except when someone is really slow. ( I’ve never done that I’m just saying I’ve only seen it in that situation) |
This. The only time I've seen this, is when the driver was driving abnormally slow, like they had no idea where they were going and not being a conscientious driver -- even in the right lane. |
And exactly WTF is the point of someone speeding around an already-slow driver, to pull in front of them and stand on their brakes, so they’re now going even SLOWER than the slow car they just went around in a fit of rage? I hate the people around here. I can easily imagine probably 80% of the posters on this forum doing exactly that. |
Probably a nice fat check from an insurance company would be my best guess… |
| The risk of injury and the inconvenience of getting a car fixed makes it seem unutterably stupid though. |
These are not smart people. They are hoping for an injury settlement check from the insurance company - $20-75K. There's usually a shady doctor or medical clinic involved who will (falsely) substantiate chronic back or neck pain. And they do it with a worthless beater vehicle that barely drivable and will be totaled even in a minor accident. They are trying to get rear ended at under 20mph. |
+1 If you drive normally you are be less likely to be a target. |
That's scary. |
| Something similar happened to me in Arlington over the summer with my kid in the car. A man in a high-end sedan cut in to my lane, hitting my front end, and then sped around the block to block me in head first at the next intersection. He got out and said he was filming my car and that I hit him. I screamed “I have kids in the car” to which he replied he didn’t care. We went back and forth but the odd thing was when I said who my insurance company was he got in his car and left. It was 10 am on a weekday. |

A guy rear ended us and his insurance tried to say it was not his fault.
I had taken a LOT of photos. As soon as his insurance saw the photos, they changed their tune. I stopped driving on one section of University Boulevard because two different drivers at two different times tried to get $$$ from my insurance company. My insurance company let slip they see this a lot. In one case, a man stopped in the right lane on University Blvd and just sat there. His car was not disabled. My car slipped on black ice and tapped his car. There was no damage. He was fine but claimed injuries and a bunch of bs. If he had not parked his car in the roadway, he would not have been hit by my car. |
PS: My fave is the mock concern or talking about Jesus. When the Jesus talk happens or the “my wife will be mad at me” talk happens, I know they will lie about what happened. |
It's insurance fraud. They'll claim you're at fault when they brake check and you hit from behind. It's very difficult to prove it wasn't your fault if you rear end. Then they'll soak insurance for years with soft tissue injury claims etc. |
If you rear end them because they brake checked you, then you were following too close to begin with, so you ARE at fault. |
Uh, NO
If you had maintained CONTROL of YOUR car, you would not have hit his car. Is ANYTHING ever your fault? Nah, I’m guessing it never is. |
