East of the River Options

I toured Stokes East End before the pandemic and I was appalled by the behaviors I saw - both from students and staff. Any idea how it's going these days?

Global Citizens could be an option, but I also have no idea how it is actually going and they don't seem to have any in person tours available right now.

Wildflower Riverseed won't have 2nd grade next year, which is what my eldest will need. I really wish they did because this would be the perfect solution.

I'm not interested in any of the "no excuses" type schools like KIPP, DC Scholars, Rocketship, etc.

Is there anything I'm missing? Are we just stuck?

How come?

If Tyler and Payne are possibilities, and if you are considering Two Rivers, I'd also look at JO Wilson. They will be in a swing space while they build a new school (likely near the Two Rivers Young campus) but they have a growing core group of committed parents and some wonderful longtime staff, and decent administration. With the new facility, I think they will quickly be an enviable campus in Ward 6. So a chance to get in on a school like Ludlow-Taylor or Maury early in the process before it becomes impossible to lottery in from out of bounds.

Do look at JO Wilson if the commute works for you.

I wouldn't do Two Rivers without reviewing the past board of trustees meeting minutes, in which they acknowledge that they have pretty serious problems with families leaving, enrollment decrease, and middle school behavior. For a preschooler, I'd say give it time, things will change, but for 3rd grade no way.

I don't know--I visited Two Rivers in the context of my work, albeit without students present, and I was impressed by the MS teachers I met. Beautiful campus; longstanding curriculum model. I doubt it will be a slam dunk success, but if you're frustrated and want to check out something else, Two Rivers Young could be it.

Well that's lovely but people are voting with their feet. 5th and 7th grade enrollment totals are way down, causing budget losses, and last year middle school behavior got so bad they had to stagger the kids' return to school after Winter Break.

Could I ask what happened to turn you off of Lee EE?

Some classrooms don’t have a teacher and not all of the teachers seem to have a solid understanding of Montessori in order for it to be implemented correctly. The school in general seems to be a lot more chaotic now than it was with the previous principal.

We are at Global Citizens in the Mandarin program and love it. The teachers are great, strong parent community, curriculum and happy kids. However, I’ve heard that families in Spanish don’t always have the same experience with a close parent community. Guess that could be the case anywhere.

The DC Ed Fest is coming up in December so that should be a great opportunity to connect with multiple schools and figure out the tour schedule.

I’ve heard through friends and various sources that they ousted the former executive director - which sounds to be a positive move. Did they do the same with the previous principal? With a not so positive outcome?

If you’re willing to drive to the Hill, I would lottery for Ludlow.

It's worth putting down for the lottery in case you get a great number for one of your kids and it might pull in the other, but otherwise it will be very hard to get multiple kids in lower grades in.

I would definitely talk to current families. My DS attended years ago and we couldn’t leave fast enough after 4th grade. This was under former leadership which was amazingly inept. Maybe things have changed but if not, I can’t imagine it’s any better than Lee EE.

I (OP) know enough about the inner workings of LT to know I would never want to send my children there, unfortunately.

I can't make it to EDFest, unfortunately. That's great to hear about Global Citizens! If that's the only gripe families have with the Spanish program I'd say that's pretty good!

If you don't want LT then you definitely don't want JO. Don't know why PPs are suggesting it.
