What do you think of DSW?

They seem to have gone to an online model.

Op here. I was wondering about this. I browsed online before going on person and was excited to try a few things but couldn't find them in the store. The salesperson said "all we have is on display" and didn't seem interested in trying to help me find anything.

I went to DSW once in the past few years looking for shoes for a formal event and it was a total bust. I didn’t recognize any brand names. I normally buy shoes in the $100-250 range and just needed some Nine West type shoes since I would probably only wear them a few times under a long dress.

I do buy my kids sneakers regularly at Off Broadway Shoes and they have a wide selection of recognizable brands - Nike, Adidas, Puma, Under Armor, etc. They also have a decent selection of Doc Martens, Birkenstock, and Vans for adults.

Ultimately I think the discount multi-brand shoe stores are good for casual shoes. For dress shoes I still go to Nordstrom or Anthropologie and for running shoes I go to a running store.

I haven’t been thrilled with my purchases from DSW. Even shoes from brands that I know sometimes seemed off — in ways that made me wonder if they were made for outlets and DSW. In contrast, I’ve found a lot of truly awesome bargains at Nordstrom Rack, to the point where that’s my first stop for shoes when I have time to browse.

I’ve also purchased some great bargains online at Sierra (part of the TJ Maxx / Marshall’s group), including my Blundstones.

Depends on the location. The one near Montgomery Mall is good and has a great selection. Wheaton Mall, not so much. I tend to buy several styles/sizes online and then return what I don't like. They do make returns very easy. But their shipping does take forever so if you need shoes in a hurry, I wouldn't buy DSW online.

We only go to DSW to try on sizing - then go online to literally anywhere else selling the same shoe and get better quality for a lower price. My DH always finds his exact same shoes for at least 35% cheaper online.

I haven’t shopped at DSW for a while. This is disappointing to read. I also miss Payless. They were awesome for those occasions when growing kids need dress shoes for a one time event and won’t fit into them long enough to wear them again.

Last time I went looking for boots, their selection was pretty bad. I got a cute pair of Chelsea boots that I love, but I was just lucky that they had exactly one really good pair. The rest of their stuff was crap, much of it not in style at all. Their sneaker selection looked better but I didn't spend much time over there.

The shoe I ordered were actually the heely skate shoes and I ordered them for my son for xmas. Fed ex actually lost them and I was really heart broken! DSW. Shoes told me they would replace them, and they did in 2 days! I was and still am overjoyed! I want to thank them so so much! I will also recommend them to every one,and can't say enough good things about them! Thank you so much DSW!

Very poor quality.

I buy more for my kids than myself. Or if I’m looking for a very standard shoe like classic vans or less, maybe.

+1. Hit or miss, but great selection on sneakers. Also on sandals.

OP, this is one store that definitely has better merchandise in higher income areas.
