What happens to all the kids who get cut for high school sports?

Pay to play travel teams
Rec
Pay to play at private schools. No joke some DC families do this.

It is sadly one of the reasons why kids specialize so early…if your high school has 2500 kids and only 12 make the Varsity basketball roster or the 16 man baseball roster you have to be excellent. It is sad but true…

America is such a sports obsessed country. All these kids who have played soccer, basketball, baseball, volleyball, tennis for years end up not making teams. I know so many boys who have played soccer their whole lives and then get cut from high school soccer. Same for baseball. Just heard of a boy who got cut from freshmen basketball. Basketball was his whole life and he didn’t make it. I have a middle school son who also loves basketball. I’m 99% certain he won’t make the basketball team in 9th grade either.

So many become college and professional players. Tom Brady sat on the bench his entire Freshmen year for a HS team that was 0-8. I know soccer kids that went on to play D1 4 years later.

Depends on the kid.

But nowadays for many sports, high school is irrelevant. Clubs and academies are where it’s at.

America is sports obsessed yet so fat

I think this is linked

“Making the team” is so central to activity levels

Whereas in Switzerland, Austria, Italy there is less stress in youth sports and people stay more active throughout their lives

Yes, and I just learned that in our district, PE isn’t required after 10th grade. I think this is nuts.

It isn’t a lot of exercise before that for a lot of classes. Many kids say a lot of teachers treat it like a study hall.

My oldest stopped playing HS sports after 9th because the high school team was nothing like his teams before. It was no longer fun. The coaches were terrible, the time commitment huge and so many were getting injured including my son. The practices were demanding and basically year round. He continued with other interests outside of school after that.

For my younger kids, I’m not even encouraging them to play for the school. It was such a negative experience and nothing like their rec/club teams. If your son doesn’t play in HS, there are so many other options to keep playing in this area.

+1 similar

My oldest actually just committed D3 this week.

My younger son played HS freshmen and this Fall sophomore year. Like pps, it sucked. Cia he’s awful. Time commitment awful. Level awful. Next year he’s not going out. It is such a huge time suck and he needs to continue with club year round to get to play in college. He could get a waiver to play HS from his club league, but then he’s Lise ground with club and get injured and grades would suffer in the all important Junior year.

They play rec sports, sometimes travel sometimes house league, and have a lot more fun than HS teams. I've even known a kid or two who could have made their HS team but chose rec ball instead for this reason. Some kids play just for the fun rather than for the drive to achieve and possibly get a scholarship.

Our school doesn't cut but we're also by far the smallest in the area (875) Meridian HS

Why would it be a joke? One reason we are sending our kids to private is because after-school sports are mandatory and several teams are no-cut. I would like my kids to continue being active in HS even if they aren’t super talented.

Hopefully they focus on important things, like actual classes and academics. Sports are not important. Sports are what people do who can't do better things.

Our private is the opposite. Way more competitive than public. But they have ma y alum in professional leagues—nba, nfl and always a hood showing in March Madness. Even really good players get cut.

For soccer HS is irrelevant. Club is where college coaches recruit and it’s way more competitive to be on the top area teams.

It’s a wonderful lesson in dealing with disappointment so good for personal growth. Some continue on rec or club teams. Others pick it up intramurals or club in college.

Ah, the Europeans are so much more virtuous canard.

Look into how skiing works there and report back.
