What happens to all the kids who get cut for high school sports?

Anonymous
Do they just stop playing?

America is such a sports obsessed country. All these kids who have played soccer, basketball, baseball, volleyball, tennis for years end up not making teams. I know so many boys who have played soccer their whole lives and then get cut from high school soccer. Same for baseball. Just heard of a boy who got cut from freshmen basketball. Basketball was his whole life and he didn’t make it. I have a middle school son who also loves basketball. I’m 99% certain he won’t make the basketball team in 9th grade either.

Yeah, it’s sucks but with mega schools and limited facilities here we are.

No. Plenty of athletes play club or rec and not high school sports.

They play outside of school or they go for another sport that is less competitive to get on the team for.

this...at some point everyone (unless you make the pros) is going to be unable to continue playing their sport at the level they want to play at--high school, college,etc.--but you can continue recreationally.

They keep playing. There is so much opportunity to play sports and have fun. While I'd personally prefer HS sports because it's cheaper, club and rec sports are great options with little to no downgrade in abilities.

They continue with club sports and/or they try new school sports that are easier to get into.

They focus on other things, just like the kids who burn out or can't afford it, or have to stop due to injuries, etc.

You say this is a sports obsessed country but there are plenty of places where sports are not a big focus at all. I never did a team sport in middle or high school and was active, had friends and was happy as a clam.

My kids go to large high school where track and cross-country are no cut sports. Kids cut from other sports are welcomed in even after season starts. Rec leagues are of course an option for kids who want to stay with their sport. High school a good time to try other clubs. Being cut from the high school team could open up new interests.

America is sports obsessed yet so fat

I think this is linked

“Making the team” is so central to activity levels

Whereas in Switzerland, Austria, Italy there is less stress in youth sports and people stay more active throughout their lives

I wonder about this too. HS team has been central for my son being active, making friends, and feeling like he is part of something. I really feel for those that don’t make it. We need smaller schools, or something, to make more opportunities for more kids.

That said, I doubt DD will want to do high school sports but she is active and has plenty of friends and we’ll just have to find some other way for her to be involved in something,

The fatness is mostly from a shi**y diet. One or two several hundred calorie Starbucks drinks a day will pack on the pounds.

Yes, and I just learned that in our district, PE isn’t required after 10th grade. I think this is nuts.

It isn’t a lot of exercise before that for a lot of classes. Many kids say a lot of teachers treat it like a study hall.

My oldest stopped playing HS sports after 9th because the high school team was nothing like his teams before. It was no longer fun. The coaches were terrible, the time commitment huge and so many were getting injured including my son. The practices were demanding and basically year round. He continued with other interests outside of school after that.

For my younger kids, I’m not even encouraging them to play for the school. It was such a negative experience and nothing like their rec/club teams. If your son doesn’t play in HS, there are so many other options to keep playing in this area.

I am an immigrant. What does it mean to "get cut for high school sport"? What do those kids do for PE?
