I love driving down Constitution and feeling the POWER!! Mr. Obama is my neighbor and I think that is really cool. |
9:30 Club
Black Cat Don't get to enjoy them as much as I used to but it's comforting to know that they are there. Kramerbooks. Loved Olsson's but now it's gone. |
I love that I live in the capital of the free world but that I can be home to my cozy, quiet neighborhood and away from all the craziness (like during demonstrations or big events on the Mall or downtown) within a short time on the bus. I live in GP. It's surreal that I can watch this stuff on the news but it's only happening a few miles away. I also love that if I want to join in, that's easy too (like on Inauguration Day). |
We've been considering moving to CA and while I will not miss the winter cold/snow there are some things I will really miss.
- The landscape. Everything is so green and lush here, even in the summer. CA is brown and scrubby most of the year. - Everyone listens to the news. Everyone gets into national elections, big SC cases, and significant foreign policy issues. - The ethnic food. CA has some great Chinese, Korean and Mexican food, in fact the Mexican food here is pretty bad but forget about finding Ethiopian. - The museums! Its great to just go down on the weekend with the kids. - The proximity to NYC, beaches, historic sites ..all in easy driving distance. CA drive for hours to get from one major city to another within the same state. - Cost of living. I know everyone complains about it but it is actually cheaper to live here than the other city/area options we would have for work. -Shorter flights to Europe than on the west coast. -The fall colors here are amazing. |
A handfull of the best high schools in the country.
Lots of green trees. Water! It may not be like seeing the Pacific ocean while driving along PCH, but I love seeing the Potomac on my way to work. Ethnic food. No tall buildings. I find them intimidating. (My issue, I know). |
Diversity- prople from everywhere live here! |
Baltimore! Annapolis! Easton!
Oh, and the faces on the locals ![]() |
I second Jim Vance's earring and E Street! I also think people here are friendly, by and large. |
WAMU. Love that people actually know what's going on with their government (besides just what some talking head said that day). Love the various nationalities. No wind tunnels in downtown. |
I love this. |
I love this thread!
All of the many, many free things to do with kids: Smithsonian, the Zoo, Rock Creek Park, free pools in the city, I could go on and on! My favorite is jumping off the beltway and driving through Rock Creek Park to get home to my city home. It is like driving on a country road every time! |
I love that I can have a car (with off-street parking) but that I rarely need to USE the car.
I like having four distinct seasons, even if the summers are a little brutal. And what everyone else said-- liberal, informed, intelligent, diverse. |
Actually, Jim Vance doesn't need an earring. He is just cooooool. I have his autograph from when he visited my 3rd grade class - 25 years ago!!! |
I like the dcum thread with the urbanites worried about suburbanites posting on their forum |
Kojo Nnamdi!
Eastern Market Listening to the drummers on Sundays in Meridian Hill Park Walking around the Franciscan Monastery in Brookland The National Arboretum in Azalea season 9:30 Club/Black Cat Uptown Theatre and, at the risk of alienating all the suburb haters, amazing ethnic food in the suburbs. Vietnamese in Falls Church, Korean in Annandale, Salvadorean in Hyattsville/Bladensburg |
