This is a positive post about living in DC and environs. I've lived here since 1994 (in the city) and like it here. It's only gotten better since '94 (how could it not, Marion Barry was mayor then). Here are some things I like about DC:
-my pleasant, safe neighborhood (Glover Park) -all the free cultural offerings -the beautiful spring and all the flowering trees -the interesting architecture -variety of good ethnic food -walkability! What do you like about living here? If you are a hater or just love ______________ (insert name of city) and can't wait to get back there, please don't post here. |
The theater community here! D.C. has some excellent theater. There aren't that many cities in this country with as vibrant a theater scene.
Music venues. The 9:30 Club is unparalleled and it's not the only great place to see a show. Blue sky and green spaces. A variety of neighborhoods. Georgetown looks totally different from Mount Pleasant which looks totally different from U Street which looks totally different from Capitol Hill. |
The smart people! I love that this area attracts the brightest minds in the country and the world. I have met such interesting people. |
Job opportunities
People are passionate about their careers, causes, etc. Walkability Weather - I know, I know the weather can really suck but I like how you can be outside most of the year (it doesn't get freezing that many days) and though this summer is extreme, we do have some nice summer days with less humidity at least in the mornings some time It's a clean city with lots of trees The fact that you can find a ton of farmer's markets, yoga classes, and wellness type activities |
The Kennedy Center and all the monuments.
The National Mall in the spring and fall. The many neighborhoods. The restaurants. The bridges. The fact that I meet a lot of people from here despite being called a transient city. |
I was born and grew up here (well, Maryland). I love that it's generally liberal. There are tons of cultural activities out there at all different price ranges, including so many that are free. I love that people are well-educated. It's got urban, suburban, rural, beach, and mountains all within a day trip. It's multi-ethnic and multi-cultural and multi-lingual. It's clean, and perhaps I'm the exception, but I find people to be mostly friendly around here. |
walkability and bikeability--so many beautiful running/biking trails throughout the city.
no one has mentioned how much cool stuff there is to do with kids!!! so many museums, so much programming for kids, classes and activities, libraries geared towards kids, really child-friendly. i like all the civil war sites, too. |
This thread is so refreshing! We live here and might as well enjoy what DC has to offer.
I also like the myriad cultural stuff available. Also the weather is pretty temperate. I love all the trees and Rock Creek Park. Oh... and also... it often gets overshadowed but this is a university town! The universities have much to offer everyone, not just to the students who attend them. |
Jim Vance's earring. |
The Metro (even with all of its faults). Free Museums. Amazing Children's theater. Proximity to the beach, the mountains and good farmland with amazing variety. Farmer's markets. Smart people everywhere. Decent job opportunities. Trees. |

I love this thread -- thank you OP!!! I grew up in NOVA and came back to the area after college. Some of my DC favorites are the cherry blossoms, the Lincoln Memorial, the diversity, the Kennedy Center, the fact that the Smithsonians are free (as is the zoo...I did not know until college that you had to pay to go into a zoo when I was visiting another city), the smart people, and the ability to get into the city quickly if you live in the suburbs (as I do, but barring terrible traffic can be there in 10 to 15 minutes). |
I love that somebody said It's Academic! |
Thank you for this thread!!! I get so freaking sick of the all the negative threads. I've lived in this area for 15 years and have travelled extensively. I always love this area! I love the architecture. I love that the city is easy to live in. Walkable. Lot's of great restaurants, museums, cultural events, people etc.... I also love that if I want to take an easy day trip to Annapolis or Baltimore I can. Baltimore has a great local culture (blue collar but real!) and Annapolis is great to go sit by the water and eat crabs. I can drive to multiple beaches within 2 to 6 hours. Love it here!! |
