My kid has dyslexia but not adhd. I think op was wrong to share the report. Not school will want that kid.

This is a horrible comment that is directly contradicted by comments on this very thread.

You should be ashamed of yourself.

NP. Huh? How is it “horrible” to point out that many private schools steer clear of LDs?

Here are some conditions for staying in a mainstream school with that profile, in my experience:

- child can handle extra tutoring on top of school, is progressing well, and isn’t too tired out from it
- not too sensitive to being « different » from peers
- child comfortable advocating for accommodations

Our dyslexia/ADHD DC was getting really worn out from the extra tutoring, and was getting really frustrated with their school performance (average, giftedness masking LD) and peers/teachers not understanding their learning differences.

DC now at Siena and thriving in a community where about 50% of students are 2E. DC will likely return to mainstream school for HS with the self-advocacy skills needed to succeed.

Parent to a 2E kid with ADHD, dysgraphia and Reading Disorder NOS. We placed DS at Siena for ES. Went back to public for MS & HS, which may have been too early. Probs should have stayed at least thru MS. Public school was good in the sense of offering a bigger social environment and more options to meet challenge and interest, but public school was terrible at all stages about offering any effective reading or writing instruction. Academically, DC needed (but we could not afford) probs daily tutoring in reading and writing but at a HS level.

ADHD inattentive, although seemingly mild, def required medication, which was very helpful but not a cure all.

She’s in private school and we have sent them her neuropsych report.

Thé neuropsych thinks her current private school can likely accommodate her, and doesn’t think she needs to apply to a specialized school like McLean School or Lab School.

Neuropsych said we might consider a low dose of medication for the ADHD.

Anyone else have experience with kids like this?

Who said she was 2E? What was her cogat score?

Right now she seems higher than avg IQ plus adhd and dyslexia.
No idea on academic testing

One day this combo will be it's own dx in the DSM. Once the DSM stops sucking.

The psychologist who did the neuropysch told you your child is 2E? And why, presumably. (Hint: it’s not based in fsiq score).

According to my British spouse “dyslexia” in England in the 1980s was defined as poor reading skills, poor focus, poor impulses/can’t sit still.

IQ absolutely factors in. You are wrong.

It is ONE factor but for a 2E diagnosis all the academics test modules need to indicate that, on top of the neuropsych’s disorders test modules.

You aren’t automatically 2E based on a Dx of adhd plus an age 7-8 fsiq test.

Everyone in Wash DC has wppsi and wisc high fsiq scores. With the usual large standard error range for someone under age 12.

Is 2E part of the Dx or are YOU calling it that because of the IQ score plus adhd?!

Everyone in DC does not have high FSIQ scores. That’s a patently ridiculous statement.

You’re not even reading the original post correctly.

This forum is supposed to be helpful. You’re being the opposite.

Also, dyslexia deficits tend to get more pronounced as you get to middle school because the work is harder.

19:55 here. Agree with the tutoring. DC had 2x/week tutoring for years, as well as summer school at Lab.

OP here. Thank you! She already meets with an OG tutor once a week and is in a phonics intervention group at school. The neuropsych recommended increasing the tutoring frequency, so we will be asking the school for that.

Thanks for the rec about summer school at Lab — I will definitely look into that!

You should do four one hour OG sessions per week.

Thanks — we are pushing for every day, as that’s what the neuropsych asked for.

As you know, private schools aren't under any obligation to follow the neuropsych recommendations, so you might need to hire a tutor on your own.
