If you have a Tesla…

Our neighbors' high schooler has had one for a few years, so I guess since he turned 16?

My 16yo takes classes at the community college. She sees plenty of teens driving teslas and other even nicer cars.

OP here. Seems that I am just behind the times!

My kid is in middle school, so I’m guessing I wouldn’t be so surprised if he had friends that were already driving.

We do not, based on the advice of a retired police officer who gave our teens driving lessons. They are too fast and fun, and the temptation to accelerate to show off is strong. However, we know many parents who do allow it based on their personal assessment of their own kids' driving personality. We will allow it after our kids pass a few maturity milestones. That's just our personal choice, not a judgment of others who make different assessments of the risk.

They are super unreliable

They have a plastic/low grade feel but they aren't "unreliable".

I don't understand this inane post. Why wouldn't a teen drive a Tesla if their family has one? What are you asking here?

It is similar to: "would you give your teen a super fast sports car?"

or, more accurately, a super-fast, mid-size sedan if it's a model 3.

My kid drives whatever he is lucky enough to borrow the keys to.

Because to me, the OP, the cost seems exorbitantly and prohibitively expensive. My siblings and I grew up wealthy but our parents had us driving used cars. And I drive a 13-year-old car now out of learned frugality; I’ll drive it till it moves no more. So, yeah - it was surprising. I just assumed teens still drove old beaters.

What were you assuming I was asking?

Once our kids are driving age, yes, we'll let them drive the Tesla. We might adjust the acceleration and handling to make it less zippy, but that's not hard to do. They're some of the safest cars on the market.

OP here. That's actually really cool. I had no idea these types of options existed.

That’s actually one of the reasons it makes it a great option for a teenager. Also, they aren’t expensive anymore.

Most reliable car I have ever owned. Low cost of maintenance.
