Prep for AMC 8

Anonymous
Two weeks until AMC 8.

DD is taking for first time and wasn’t able to join any club or do tutoring.

She has been working on test questions with a parent good at math.

I am the non math parent. It is awesome to watch her problem solving skills get better. Fun for her.

She will try to do 2-4 practice tests over the next two weekends.

I am imagining others have very intense prep that extends more than her three weeks.

If she likes it and I really think she does, then how do I support her? Was thinking summer camps, but not intense.

My kid just brought home stuff about this today. I can't imagine he can do much prep with only 2 weeks notice. But I guess we will check some stuff out. He seems excited lol.

Well by stuff I meant a sign up sheet

But this week he got some sample problems to do from his math teacher.

Art of Problem Solving leads the Math Contest Industrial Complex. There are a few small Chinese shops too.
If you want to join the crowd pays thousands of dollars to train to win a "fun" math contest, good luck!

Plenty of free material online too, in text and YouTube. Google finds it easily.

Are there schools that sign kids up for the AMC 8? MS or ES?

I wonder this too. I have a 9th grader who took geometry in 8th & have literally never heard of this test until this thread. APS schools.

Middle school. It's a middle school test. They take it after school and it's voluntary so if your kid didn't want to take it you might never have hears about it! But also they may not have been doing it during covid.

Do they release scores?

My kid got his scores the day after the contest ended. A good number of people know what they got but they have not released the honor roll or distinguished honor roll scores. There is a bit of an issue because the test was made public after the second day and some people had the questions in advance. No idea what MAA is doing about that info.

My kid took it at a non-school site, his school does not offer it.

I don't understand why schools hold on to scores that they have in tehir hand for so long. The AMC 8 scores were distributed to most of the kids who took it the day after the test closed. Public schools seem to be the exception to the rule.

Your proctor is either incompetent or is willfully squatting on the scores. All proctors, whether doing online administration or paper and pencil, have a proctor portal with edvistas. All proctors would have needed to log into the portal to open the testing period on the test day (digital administration) or download the tests + scan in the answer sheets (paper administration). All of the score reports were available in the proctor portal about a day after the AMC8 testing window closed. Your proctor has had the results for quite awhile, if they can be bothered to log into their portal and look at them.
