Prep for AMC 8

Anonymous
My 6th grader in pre-algebra is really enjoying math and wants to try AMC 8. But she has sports during the math club that helps to prep kids.

I am new to this, still learning about AMC 8, and terrible at math so I can’t help.

What resources are there to help prep a kid for AMC 8? Anything through APS? Private in-person? Virtual?

To prep, you can sign her up at AOPS for middle school contest math. Depending on where you live, she can attend live classes or virtual ones (I recommend live classes because virtual class is silent).

Here's the archive of previous tests and solutions. The cheapest and easiest preparation is working through old tests and reading the solutions for any problems she didn't know how to tackle. https://artofproblemsolving.com/wiki/index.php/AMC_8_Problems_and_Solutions

Students get 40 minutes for each test. They get 1 point for each correct answer and 0 for each incorrect or skipped, meaning she should guess on every problem she couldn't finish right before the time expires.

Where do the tests take place? I haven’t heard about it from our middle school

Good advice. AMC8 has some number theory and counting and probability type questions that she may not be familiar with. AoPS is a good place to learn that.

There are also contest math books with lots of problems.

What is AMC used for? Who gets the scores? Just the kids? Or is it in their grade profile.

Our kid loves math and wants to try AMC but can't take the math counts club and the on line classes for prep are a lot of hours!

Nothing. It's just for fun and practice and bragging to the other parents, like a kids sports league. Scores are secret. They've even stopped publishing the honor rolls, so anyone can lie about their score.

Also, unless they do the hours of study and practice, it won't be very fun or rewarding.

How long do kids study for AMC 8? Do some kids work on AMC 8 all year round?

Does AMC 8 help when kids apply to math focused high schools?
