And I would suggest waiting. In your situation, I waited to 20 weeks--to tell *anyone*.

Among other things, waiting got across--without me reciting chapter and verse of my own difficult history, which definitely does not belong in a message to someone in your or my colleague's shoes--that I understood that pregnancy is tenuous. Which it was, esp. at my age.

My email said something like: "I wanted to tell you, before I tell anyone else, that I am expecting a baby in [month 20ish weeks in the future]. We are assured that things look OK, so I am going to have to share with work soon and did not want you to hear from anyone else. [affectionate close that was appropriate to our specific relationship], MyName."
