This tells you all you need to know about ACHS. https://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/1162560.page

Just move to McLean. |
Would absolutely stick with private or move for public. |
Move to where, locally speaking? |
Sad to learn a teen who was shot in Alexandria City over the weekend has died. Not sure if they were a student at ACPS, but sad for the community nonetheless.

So I hear a lot of talk about 2 tracks in public for MS/HS grades where if you are in Honors classes and hang out with the "right" kids, you are more insulated from the violence/stress/general environment of the school(s). Is this correct? Is your kid just not affected at all because in our very nice neighborhood, it seems that the kids all go to public but I always wonder with all the stuff you hear about MS/HS, how can they stand it?
How on earth does any parent allow their kid to enroll in either MS/HS if it really is chaotic most of the time? |
I believe the incidents are isolated and far removed from kids on the honors track. It’s easy to dwell on the negative press. Likely the majority of neighborhood families do in fact go public in Alexandria, with a sizable number that go private also. My info is second hand however. Family friends of ours go public in Alexandria city but at a very highly regarded elem school. They believe it’s a generally safe school system. |
So you have zero experience with ACPS. helpful. |
My point is that negative press tends to draw a disproportionate amount of attention. (This evening parents are going nuts over middle kids assaulting customers in N Arlington cafes, but I’m certain those are just a small group of kids up to no good.) My info is second hand, but my Alexandria friends believe the Alexandria City schools incidents are isolated. Overall they are happy with their school. Hopefully others will chime in. |
Here is some first hand experience - my special needs child had two stints in an ACPS elementary school. My child received inadequate instruction and was bullied. Don’t discount the reports of people with actual negative experience with ACPS. |
So you have zero to add. Typical. |
Because for my kid it's not chaotic. She loves school. She loves her friends. She loves her teachers. I'm not denying that there are problems, and I know people who left because their kids did NOT have the experience she is having. But for her, it's a good fit and I've been impressed with what she's learning. |
How did she feel about today’s bomb threat and the resulting early dismissal for the entire school? |
She’s in middle school. |
