How Much Beer is Too Much?

Unless, he has a tendency to get loud and drunk and disruptive, in which case you have a different problem on your hands.

This. I think your hyper-focuesed on the beer because it is easier to count. People can keep "topping off" their glass of wine.

I’d buy 4 reds, 4 white and a 1/2 case of beer and I would stop counting everyone’s consumption because that’s INSANE.

So that’s 4 beers for the other 10 adults? That sounds like too little.

It sounds like there is just one beer drinker, though, so maybe that works out?

You're insane because if someone leaves your house and is legally drunk, has an accident, you're gonna be responsible and get sued.

It is fine to have a cooler of beer in the garage on ice for a party.

No, that’s not how it works when you’re a legal adult and serving your self at somebody’s house.

I don’t understand how keeping beer in a separate location makes BILs, or anyone’s, consumption of it less noticeable. Sounds like it would be more noticeable if he has to keep leaving and going to this separately stored cooler.

I mean, I would just because fridge space is at a premium on t-day, I might not have room for a 12 pack of beer in the fridge.
As for hiding it, not sure why that is your responsibility or concern at all. Do you want to hide it from your kids, you don’t want them to know some people drink a lot? I don’t get the need to hide it - it’s not you or DH, so why do you care.

100 percent this. My FIL only drinks whiskey with ice. It's pretty much impossible to gauge his consumption because of top ups, but trust and believe by the end of the night there is a big old dent in the handle on the bar.

Do you genuinely believe this is true? I would love to know more about your world view…

Having said that, I would not be ok with someone very drunk leaving my home and driving. Not because of any legal liability but because it is dangerous. He could hurt someone.

Agree with all of this. PP made me snicker. But I also bet BIL's wife is sued to driving and it is also very possible BIL could be sober enough to drive home. Not sure how long Thanksgiving is at your house, but some family celebrations definitely go 8 hours or more.

That’s not how it works.

Those of you saying a person drinking that much in a day is fine are delusional. A person who drinks a six pack in a day is out of line.

Gross.
