Advice needed - how to return worn dress?

Anonymous
Try taking it back to a store.

I think you’re out of luck. You wore it and you broke it. Dresses don’t come with warrantees, but I understand why you’re upset about it. I’ve notice a lot of zippers have been of poorer quality lately tbh. What brand dress was it?

Does Saks have its own alteration service? Maybe they could repair it for you.

I’ve noticed stores have gotten VERY strict with their return policy.

Saks

I think you are probably out of luck, but if you are a regular Saks shopper or have a Saks credit card, then ask to speak to the store manager or write an email or letter to customer service. You're going to have to elevate this if you want any shot of return. Does Saks have in store alterations? I'd settle for them replacing the zipper in-house.

I took it to two tailors and they each quoted around $300 to fix the zipper, which would entail having it completely replaced. Don’t think that’s worth it.

You spent $500 on a dress. Cough up the $300. You have a problem with money management.

What brand/designer is the dress? You could try contacting them directly - seems like a quality control issue.

And did this really happen the way you said? Or was the dress too snug to begin with?

Just be a Karen when you go to the store and demand it be fixed. Start screaming about how they sell defective goods. Then they’ll return it.

OP, are you serious? You took the tags off and it’s passed the return period. It’s over. Stop being such a miser.

I would definitely pursue this further. No zipper should break that quickly - especially not on such an expensive garment, after such little wear! I'd keep calling and emailing - and perhaps even try going directly to the store. Social media can be good for this, too - tweet at the company.

This isn't a matter of OP just changing her mind. This is a defective garment! Of course the store should fix it.

Anonymous wrote:Help! I bought an expensive $500 dress to wear to a wedding last weekend from a big retailer. I bought it at the end of the summer because it was on sale. When it arrived I tried it on quickly and it fit so I took off the tags and put it in my closet. A month later I went to put it on for the wedding and the zipper completely broke. I am pretty sure it’s defective because it’s gets stuck and the zipper just splits open on its own even though the dress is zipped up.

I called the retailer to process a return or exchange and they won’t take it back because it’s outside of the 30 day return window and I don’t have the tag. I told them I would be fine with them exchanging it for the same dress or even fixing the zipper but they won’t do either.

Regardless, shouldn’t a dress last more than 2 months? How can they not be willing to help with something defective purchased so recently????

Normally I would fight the charge on my credit card but I bought the dress with a gift card from the retailer.

Do I have any recourse here or am I out $500 with a dress that’s unwearable?

I think you are SOL.

Take it to a tailor and have it repaired.

Did the zipper break because, uh, the dress is too small?

My sister worked at Macys and from her stories, they wlll eventually take it back if you are assertive enough...

It sounds like you gained weight while the dress was in your closet. When you put it back on, you broke the zipper. Find 3 estimates on tailors fixing the zipper. Then get it fixed and maybe an extra panel of material to widen it.
