Is the DMV the only area where college is still popular?

Yes. Colleges outside the DMV are completely empty. They are all shuttering.

There was a Daily podcast about this like last week or two? Is that where this is coming from? Apparently it’s true that more people dont see the value of a college education. This seems to be an outsized number of Republicans who also believe that college is just teaching “wokeness.”‘ But I’d hardly say only the DMV has kids going to college?

That podcast was about how college isn’t as appealing to many people due to the high amount of debt you will incur.

Then what would explain record enrollment in universities? Just the DMV area kids? Obviously that doesn't make any sense.

There is no record enrollment in universities. There are record applications and low acceptance rates to a small number of universities.

University enrollment is down by 3 million students over the last 10 years.

There is a demographic cliff coming. In addition, the price of college is out of control and not worth the debt for many.

That said, the OP is ridiculous.

People need to distinguish between the “college experience” which is a luxury and the benefits of a college education for upward mobility, which can be obtained through community college and state college options at a reasonable price. It is not the DMV, it is UMC and UMC aspiring communities that focus on a college experience for their kids that is becoming financially out of reach (or a poor investment depending on your circumstances).

The strongest price sensitive students will get financial aid and get the best of both, but they are the minority.

The vast majority of student debt is held by kids attending the $7,000 / year state school down the street...not kids knowing which schools offer merit aid or gaining acceptance to an Ivy that will provide 100% grants to that kid. These kids are living at home and borrowing the entire $7,000 per year because these schools offer only loans and their LMC families don't contribute anything.

Now...these are also the kids more likely to just go work at an Amazon warehouse for $25/hour vs. go to college at all.

College used to be more affordable, and it opened doors. Now it's unaffordable and doesn't seem to open doors, admission to top schools feels like a lottery, and there's the additional mental health burden on high achievers that didn't used to be as apparent. That doesn't mean people aren't going or don't value education. But it does explain survey responses about college not being a good value.

pfft! What an ignorant statement!

With the rising cost of college, I think more and more people are waking up to the idea that college is not the end all be all to achieve upward mobility for all students (or even most). It depends on the student's background and major, but for a large segment of the population, it is true that going to college is not a wise financial choice.

DMV seems to be one of the few areas people care where you went to college.
