What did you think of Happiness Falls? I read it last month and was disappointed. It seemed a little too contrived for me.

Contrived. Yes, it definitely was. However I generally enjoyed the book.

I am reading Night Watch by Jayne Anne Phillips, which piqued my interest from the National Book Award longlist. It's set in the West Virginia after the Civil War, a 12 year old and her catatonic mother are surrendered by her supposed father to the trans-allegheny lunatic asylum (which was a real place). The story goes into their lineage, how the Civil War drove them to Appalachia, and the search for the girl's biological father. It's heavy prose but really intriguing, especially with the addition of historical pictures, drawings, and text.

Anyone else a NetGalley reviewer? I feel like I can’t participate in these threads because I’m reading books that won’t be out for a while.

I'm in two different book clubs, one is reading Mad Honey and the other is reading A Gentleman in Moscow. Haven't started either one yet. Someone recently recommended 'Never Enough: When Achievement Culture Becomes Toxic' by Jennifer Breheny Wallace and think that will be my next read.

I’m hoping to start this one soon. I’m waiting for a kindle copy to become available at the library and it’s showing I’m next. I would love a thread to discuss it after finishing.

I'm listening to A Bone to Pick, which is the second book in the Aurora Teagarden series by Charlaine Harris. Harris is better known for her vampire series with Sookie Stackhouse that was made into the show True Blood. I was never interested in that series but did read the Aurora Teagarden series years ago. I saw this one at the library and decided to revisit it, because for some reason this series is one that always stayed in my mind.

Unless it’s embargoed, I would definitely like to hear about ARCs. It helps to get on the Libby waitlists early, lol.

How do you sign up/get approved for this? I’m interested!

Can anyone recommend some spooky Halloween reads? I’ve already read pretty much every Stephen King and Shirley Jackson and I reread the classics (Frankenstein, Dracula) every year. Enjoyed Mexican Gothic recently.

I just picked up Dracula for the first time and it seemed thematic for October. Also I just finished The Celebrants which was very poignant.

I started A Wrinkle in Time on Monday. Almost done.

Great choice! Love that book. Maybe I'll re-read it.

DP. I thought it was great. What do you mean by contrived? Aren’t all works of fiction contrived?

I love spooky books, especially anything with ghosts or haunted houses. Some suggestions:

The Widow of Rose House by Diana Billar

Nettle & Bone by T. Kingfisher

One Dark Window by Rachel Gillig (love the writing, sequel comes out in a week or so)

A Dreadful Splendor by BK Myers

Anything by Simone St. James, but I like her older stuff best.
