Why won't the mailman shut our mailbox?

Anonymous
Considering the staffing challenges USPS has had for the last several years calling is probably going to help not at all. A friend's daughter got hired over the phone (she lasted 2 weeks), and another friend's daughter who quit school after 10th grade was hired as a temp some years ago without even a GED, she's now regular employee, has been postmaster in one town and now supervisor at a larger station. She's had stretches working 12 hour days for weeks on end, including Saturdays. Carriers in rural areas have it especially tough because of the last mile delivery business (and subject to draconian time metrics).
Best bet is to attach a spring to make it snap back shut even if left open. Not so tight the carrier loses fingers though.

Eye roll not appropriate. Women work in the postal service too.

Don't they carry more than just letters?

Leave a note on the mall box "please close to keep mail dry THANK YOU."

Most likely because he/she/they/it has a lot of mail to deliver and it takes effort to reach down, grab the door, and close it. Doesn't make it right, but it's likely the reason.

Regarding your comment on theft, that is a real issue. But they can get to your mail even if the door is closed. Only way to prevent it is to get a box that locks. We had to do this because our mail was stolen, I found out the hard way when I got a call from the police department of a town 30 mins away that had a bunch of my mail and those 0% credit card offers with courtesy checks. They actually tried using one, thankfully my credit card blocked it.

Ask him.

They slam them hard so try that and see if yours bounces open. That is what happened to us for a while.

If it’s just yours, there may be something weird about your mailbox. Maybe you are just used to it. Maybe ask a friend to try it. Does it need a lot of force? Does it bounce back?

Or, you did something to piss the carrier off and this in their revenge.

Calling the post office might get them in trouble, but it is not going to improve your mail service.

FYI - the Postal Service does not have locality pay, so carriers in the DC area often need a second job to make ends meet. If I were you I would let this go. If it is in the box, how wet can it really be getting?

If theft is a big concern, replace the box with one the carrier drops Mail in and it is locked.

He thinks it’s a toilet seat.

When we say “mail man” and putting things in wife’s “mail box” what are we really talking about?

He doesn’t like you

Ok… but bear with me here. Perhaps this particular mail carrier is a man, therefore mailman is appropriate?

You’re asking for a dissertation on the non-binary nature of human sexuality. I hope the Postmistress General whose bloomers got in a bunch over the “mailman” comment doesn’t have time for one.

He hate you. Soon he take a shit in the box for you.
