Why won't the mailman shut our mailbox?

Anonymous
There is nothing wrong with our mailbox - it opens and closes just fine. But the mailman has inexplicably taken to leaving it wide open every time he puts mail in, leaving it to get soggy with rain - not to mention vulnerable to theft. I notice no one else's mailbox is left open, just ours. Has anyone had this happen? Should I leave a note asking him to please shut it?

Same reason my husband can't close a cabinet door and my colleague can't push in his chair.

I’m going to guess that it’s easier to pull the door open than it is to reach out and push the door shut past the retaining latch or whatever keeps the door shut. They are on the clock, so they just leave the door open. Just like it’s somehow easier to reach down and lift the toilet seat than returning it to its original position. Or it’s just spite.

Does your box actually STAY shut? Some don't. I've got a few on the route that will flap back open after I've gotten to the next yard-letter carrier here.

I would leave a note...and then call the post office if it keeps happening. I would not want someone to easily see my mail or have it get wet.

If it’s in any way harder to close than other boxes, you are SOL. So compare it to the other boxes nearby that the mailman does close.

The US postal service is a model of efficiency.

I think they are having to move a lot faster these days to get all the packages delivered.

This happens to our neighbors who have the plastic mailboxes more often than anyone else.

To alert you that you have mail.
