Ophelia is nearly at hurricane Category 1 strength, people

Isabel as it passed to the west of Winchester was a Tropical Storm but its impact was huge as a hurricane and tropical storm. 51 deaths attributed to the storm, $3.6B in damage in total. Some in the area without power for a week. I think the Derecho in 2012 is probably the second most impactful wind event in the area.

It happens. Past couple years most have passed us by. Don’t get too hung up on it. Until it’s actually storming there is always a chance it won’t. And then it might start and be over in very little time.

Me too. We had just taken the very foolhardy step of closing on a new house (which flooded) three weeks before the closing date of the sale of our old house, which I’m very grateful did not. Still have stress nightmares about that time.

Hurricane Isabel did significant damage to this area in 2003, and passed over the DC metro area *as a tropical storm*. We lost power for a week, and had to carry groceries up 16 flights of stairs. Someone died at UMD, where I was a grad student at the time. More than a million Marylanders lost power and there was significant beach erosion and property damage.

Ophelia, even if it strengthens to category 1, is not predicted to have the wind span or wind speed of Isabel, so we should not sustain the damage we did 10 years ago. Furthermore, a lot of pruning has happened since then and we don't have quite the tree canopy we had at the time. We're in a drought, so there shouldn't be widespread flooding except in coastal areas.

However, everyone should be aware of possible downed trees, power outages or flash flooding in our region tomorrow and Sunday.

I already made a dash to COSTCO and loaded up. FYI it was crazy packed.
No way is my family going to go with out.

I hope you didn't stock up your freezer

Yep, we were without power for 8 days after Isabel.

Another overhyped storm that disappoints. This hurricane season is a nothing burger. I am officially putting it on a PIP.

I sure hope this storm disappoints! Who says, Oh, I am SO disappointed I didn’t lose power for a week, have to coordinate emergency home repairs, communities wrecked, insurance premiums skyrocket, cabin fever, etc etc. Geez, what a disappointment that my life, or the lives of strangers, aren’t disrupted and changed for the worst.

I'm glad I seeded my yard. The rain isn't very heavy

A bit disappointed here. Barely any rain nor wind. Suitably cloudy. I feel sorry for all the events cancelled. I'm sure a lot of money was lost because of that.

I suppose we should print some "I survived nearly Hurricane Ophelia."

People sure do enjoy a good panic in these parts
