Stolen paintings

Here’s why I chuckle about stories like this:

We are meant to be inspired by the selfless, compassionate approach of the victim who embodies progressive values. And on a certain level, I am inspired by her.

But I bet that if the thief was a bearded white guy with a mullet driving a truck the victim and the center would have called the police to report a hate crime.

Am I right?

I find it really interesting how police abolitionists throw their deeply held beliefs out the window if the bad guy is a cisgender white man.

I live in the neighborhood and have been following the absolutely bizarre conversation on the Adams Morgan listserv. Some thoughts: I took a very quick look at the theif's photo and it was my impression that he looked white. Also, a key part of the dynamic in Adams Morgan is the !@#$% old hippies who still basically run the neighborhood. The artist seems to be Millennial but everyone else blowing the restorative justice horn or chanting "we keep us safe" is one of the "old timers". They are positively blooming with pride that the neighborhood we family-minded Gen Xers invested so much in is becoming the seedy hovel of their hedonistic youthful days.
