+1 I love it too. Great breather for my oldest who takes a long time to complete work. |
You are an a$$ hat. |
Our school district doesn't have that many Jewish students, but we have a lot of Jewish teachers. Before we had the Jewish holidays on the calendar, there were enough leave requests for these days from teachers and school staff that they had problems staffing school. Substitutes only covered about 1/10-1/4 of the requested leave and then administrative staff helped to watch over classrooms where kids were essentially idle and not actually learning much (they would get one worksheet that took about 10 minutes to occupy a 45 min class), so the students were just sitting around bored or worse, causing trouble. Finally, our school district scheduled teacher professional days (teachers worked, students off) for those days. Teachers could elect to take accrued leave on those days and would not need a substitute, but for those who didn't need to take the holiday off, they got one of the professional days to catch up on grading, papers, prep work, etc, all the work that teachers said that they didn't have enough time to do. It's a happy compromise. |
There are many Jewish students at the FCPS schools my children attend. |
So? A 6th grader can use the day off and catch up on school work at home. I bet your child would love to do just that. The moment to complain about Observance Days was when FCPS sent a survey home. I’m not Jewish, but I have great respect for those who are, and I’m appalled by the passive aggressive tone of your comment. |
So no Good Friday or Easter Monday? |
I’m a DP, but no, we do not need those days off. |

| Every religion has at least 1 day off on the FCPS calendar. Remember: equity! |
Yes, equity. How horrible it is to show respect to a diverse community & let them celebrate their holidays. /sarcasm |
We do We don’t get Easter Monday off, 2 years ago we didn’t get Good Friday off. I had a meltdown that year, and we allow to have so many holidays. I can’t even tell my family and friends out of state cause they will laugh at us if we tell then we get a day off because of a Jewish holidays. They believe we are a Christian nation. |
Rastafarians? No insult to them (just an example), but if everyone was to get a holiday, there would be no school. What should be the size of the student population or petition necessary to get a holiday? I don't have the answer. |
You are not actually comparing Jews to Rastafarians |
Didn't mention the Jewish faith and no comparison was intended to any religion other than the size of the target faith population. Strictly a practical numbers game that has a very real impact on the calendar. What is the cut off? |
I said it on another thread today that the trolls have become so stupid on this site. Not even trying to pretend they aren’t trolls. Too obvious PP. Tsk tsk. By the way, I’m hoping this thread is locked sooner rather than later. |
