Very bad day at work

But on a positive note- when I took my current role I interviewed at several places and one of the people I interviewed with was behind me on line at the grocery store! He recognized me and after some casual chit chat- he said “if you are ever in the market again, don’t hesitate to reach out.” So I took the opportunity to give him a very high level view of what was happening. Recruiter has reached out! They are still looking to fill that role!!

My terrible, no good day has turned around.

WOW this is one of those things that will be a funny story someday. And I would love to see the look on your CEOs face when you quit.

This is how I got one of my jobs too, at the grocery store!

Get the offer and then quit with zero notice.

Another vote for zero notice. if you haven't been at this job long- you don't even have to include it on a future resume. you can say you took a break to recharge.

But, your CEO sounds terrible but it is nice to know his true behavior this early in the game

Don’t tell the new job about this story!! It makes you look terrible. Just say something like “actually I’m not sure it’s a great fit and I’d love to chat about other opportunities.”

I did. All the work is tracked through tickets and we had a meeting three times a week about this work since I started. Tickets were marked complete and status was reported that everything was on track. I have gotten weekly demos on how it looks.

So what % was done 48 hours ago that it’s so behind by the Friday deadline.

Sounds like you need to get a final draft submitted to you at the 24 or 48 hour mark and then review it if it’s good, or All Hands In Deck fix it if it’s subpar work.

Client deliverables need a tight process and review by at Mgmt. Set the timing in that, and if the team sucks they’ll get earlier artificial deadlines bc they can’t handle actual deadlines.

Sounds like she gave a high-level version so it is probably what you suggested? But it did not seem to stop progress.

The client defended you so you should not be fired. Thank goodness for that client!

You haven't said whether you know who dropped the ball and why, but you need to side-line them, or if you can point to fraudulent tickets, get them fired for cause. I don't know your workplace rules.

The CEO is neither right nor wrong, OP. The fact is, from their vantage point of 10,000 feet, the buck stops with you, even if they are fully aware that your underling messed up, and not you specifically. They don't care. They just want the work done on time, and done well enough that the client is reasonably satisfied with it. If I were them, since this is your first mistake and the client likes you, I wouldn't eject you right away. But there shouldn't be a second such issue, so root out the rot in your team and be ruthless!

This. It sucks, and the CEO was wrong to handle it the way they did, but you are ultimately responsible for your team. If your direct report lied to you, which it sounds like he/she did, then they should be fired and you may have to micromanage everyone else for a bit.

How did things work out for you, OP?

It’s OP- things have worked out great! I got a new offer that is more money and i am just waiting on my background stuff to be done.

I have not been fired from my current role but I have been completely ignored.

I have been told my background will be done by Tuesday so I will resign and give two weeks notice unless they want me to just leave- and then they can pay me for the two weeks.

My client gave me a glowing recommendation for my new role so that felt great.
