Ditto for our DD with ADHD! |
+1 I think people really do have less time because of double earner families. It is puzzling for me also to see how much money these parents are willing to throw money at daycare, reading coaches, handwriting coach, tutors for ES-level instruction, aftercare, take out, housecleaners, instacart, babysitters, dog walkers, doggy daycare. The cost of all of this to stand in place of a SAHP or extended family. To each their own though. |
Not op. First, I don’t know about you, but I had less complicated system than my dd does. I find the online systems and homework harder to follow up compared to what we had when we had textbooks & somehow a leaner barrage of online to do’s, assignments and systems. Second, there was less awareness, and some kids didn’t manage or had to put considerable effort just to stay afloat. If OP can simplify her child’s life by getting him help and instruction in these skills, what’s wrong with that? Trial and error and learning by failing are not the only valid options for learning skills. |
Yep. It isn't worth having us as parents fight a battle when we can outsource it to a professional. Thank you to the pps who recommended the two people! |
| Just curious, how do you know your kid lacks exec function skills? Does being forgetful always means that? |
|
Additionally, kids need to hear messages from different adults in their lives. They will reject messages about discipline, organization and planning from their parents cause they view it as nagging, but take that as sage wisdom from a teacher, tutor or coach.
So that's why it can be worth paying someone else to teach them those skills because the kids are more receptive to it. |
My kid's exec function challenges are beyond just being forgetful or having organizational challenges. Kid has trouble holding in emotions/emotional regulation. The exec function group we did in late elementary was very much oriented toward emotional issues. https://www.theottoolbox.com/emotional-regulation-and-executive-function/ |
| Thank you for the group. Is there something like this for academics? |
I don't want to stay at home--my career is important to me. I also don't expect my mom or another family member (my MIL lives with us) to do any of what you listed. I pay someone to clean, occasionally do take out or Instacart, and in the past, nursery school/daycare because I don't want to do it or don't have to because I can afford it. Simple as that. |
| Look at Essig Education Group and Lauren Eckert Coaching (now Life Solved Coaching). |
Can I please have his contact information? I too am looking for help in Clarksburg/Gaithersburg area |
| These skills definitely need to be taught. I so would've benefited from this growing up! I wish schools would teach these life skills more than some of the advanced math few students use day to day. |
| Does anyone know why these skills aren't taught? These and personal finance are crucial concepts! |

Put something out on your school list serv that you are looking for an EF coach
Ask your school counseling office Put something out on NextDoor Mention it to every friend group you have - you'll be surprised that chances are several of your friends children already have an EF coach To everyone NOT offering help and support, eff-off. Until you've experienced a child with ADHD, you have no idea what you are talking about. OP is doing the right thing for her child. ~been there done that. ADHD kid is successful in college, and has support from the office of disabilities (all colleges have them) and years of support in MCPS with an EF coach |
| You can ask on the special needs forum. |
