Friendship issue and who pays: how to handle?

Pro tip from the MC friend:

If you are the newly wealthy friend, and you wish to pay for _____ (the thing itself doesn’t matter), do not say this:

“Let me get that because I can afford it an you can’t.”

Especially do not say that if you had no role in earning the new money windfall yourself and it’s all a result of your spouse’s hard work and savvy over the years while you had a series of low-paying positions. All while your “can’t-afford-it” friend held better positions. This makes it more galling, if you can believe it
