I would have just ignored her.

Doesn’t sound like she is very stable if she is yelling like that in a store.

She wanted to yell at her daughter. "How could you leave your phone in a cart! How could you leave your phone in the cereal aisle! How could you leave your phone in the freezer by the ice cream! How could you drop your phone by customer service!"

Nothing good would have come out of speaking up.

You already wasted more time at the store being a good citizen and turning the phone in. Why get pulled in to that drama? I would want nothing to do with that.

I wouldn't have said anything b/c I don't generally engage with people who are loud/aggressive. And I agree with PP that she just wanted something more specific to yell about. But I'd also bet a large sum that the daughter whined and begged to have the phone and that the mom warned her many times to keep track of it...

Why would OP think the anger was targeted at the person who found it rather than the angry lady’s kid?

It’s fine the OP said nothing but they also could’ve just said what happened. Not need to set anyone straight or “stand up for themselves”. Weird take.

+1, all it would do is turn her ire on you. I would assume she just has anger issues generally or that there was some dynamic with the daughter at play (maybe loses phone all the time, maybe daughter lied about what happened to it and claimed it had been stolen, etc.). I would feel bad for the people working there but, having worked retail before, this is par for the course. No one got fired over that, I promise. But if you'd said something, it might have escalated further because what if the fact that it was found outside in a cart upset her more? No one wins.
