The program is the same at all schools where it's offered.

Navy is known for zealous parents. It tests higher because it has AAP classes with zealous parents. But if your kid is in gen-ed in Navy he/she might just have a normal education.

Don't go by reputation of the school, if you want your child to get ahead, you have to do all the work. Few in AAP is waiting on school to teach their kids.

And how can Marshall be so far ahead of Woodson?

It’s been discussed in another thread. Marshall got permission from FCPS years ago to automatically enroll most 11th and 12th grade students in IB English. At other schools the kids, not the school, decide whether they want to take IB or AP classes.

When a higher percentage of kids take an IB class/test, it boosts the “college readiness” component of the U.S. News ratings.

If other schools also were given leave to automatically enroll kids in IB/AP courses, or Marshall let the kids decide whether to take IB English, Woodson and several other schools would be rated higher than Marshall.

It’s a good reminder not to take the ratings too seriously, because they be gamed.

This exactly.

How competitive are sports in Oakton to get into?

Very little difference between Oakton and Woodson in my opinion. Both are great schools. My oldest graduated from Woodson and attended a top 5 university. My youngest will attend Oakton High (because we moved) but I would be perfectly fine if my youngest attended Woodson.
