On the US News, look at the college readiness percentage. Oakton is far ahead of Woodson.

Look at their methodology, college readiness is the biggest factor at 30%. You can compare element by element to see where Woodson is good at.

College Readiness score:

TJ 100%, Mclean 77.3%, Langley 76.5%, Oakton, 74.2; Marshall 73.6,
Everyone else is below 70%. Two richmond high school are in the 69%, but their enrollment is only around 200, while top 5 high school has 2000 students each.

Why is the number of students relevant? Isn't college readiness based on the proportion taking/passing AP/IB exams?

There is also college curriculum breadth (10%) which is "calculated among a school's 2020-2021 12th graders from the percentage who took, and the percentage who earned qualifying scores on, multiple AP or IB exams. Students who took exams and earned qualifying scores in four AP or IB content areas earned full credit. Those who earned qualifying scores in two or three AP or IB content areas were given partial credit of 50% and 75%, respectively."

This part seems to be based solely on those who took and earned qualifying scores on multiple AP/IB exams. So a school could have proportionally more students taking/passing AP/IB exams but if a larger proportion are not doing so in all four content areas then they get penalized.

Oakton is ranked as a STEM school but the others aren't. Also wondering if this is basically still reflecting the fall out of the pandemic and reflects demographics more than schools per se.

It’s been discussed in another thread. Marshall got permission from FCPS years ago to automatically enroll most 11th and 12th grade students in IB English. At other schools the kids, not the school, decide whether they want to take IB or AP classes.

When a higher percentage of kids take an IB class/test, it boosts the “college readiness” component of the U.S. News ratings.

If other schools also were given leave to automatically enroll kids in IB/AP courses, or Marshall let the kids decide whether to take IB English, Woodson and several other schools would be rated higher than Marshall.

It’s a good reminder not to take the ratings too seriously, because they be gamed.

This is all about hair-splitting to help justify inflated real-estate prices in some areas. The same kid will do just as well at any of these schools.

What are “these schools,” or do you not worry about that when you’re just cutting and pasting?
