Only boring people get bored.

People in developing countries can also get bored, OP. Time to drop that offensive phrase.

I used to be a work hard, party hard world traveler. Now I’m a SAHM. You get used to the kid life and it is fun. I have friends from all over. We hang out with the kids. It isn’t so bad.

Yes. It's kind of fun to sit with your kids eating chik fil a or whatever godawful things kids like, and remember your glitzy life. I love looking around the strip mall chairs and say "this is my life now". Seriously. It's so darn amusing!

At first it's scary, but then it's a relief to realize that there never was a pot of gold at the end of rainbow you spent years chasing.

And not a knock on travel, which I love, but I know lots of people who travel a ton but read little and they are boring. Whereas I know people who read a ton but travel much less who are better conversationalists and more interesting thinkers.

+1.

Exactly. Or the gold was just a little bit different of a reward. What you need, not what you want.

Seriously. The pot of gold was what? Some good stories and photos? Eviable instagram posts? Who cares? That stuff is so ephemeral.

Parenting can be boring some days, and certain aspects of parenting are truly a grind. But guess what, travel is the same! When you travel a lot, it's easy to get bored sitting in an airport or on a plane, going out to restaurants, seeing sights, etc. Yes, there are more exciting travel experiences and that stuff can be worth it, but usually also involves doing a lot of the former too.

But the difference with parenting is that there's this long game that is interesting and worthwhile even when parenting is boring af in the moment. Like when I'm in one of the "sitting around the airport" moments of parenting, some part of still understands that I am getting a front row seat to watching a person... become a person. Like all it takes is thinking for a second about what my kids will be like at 17 or 22 or 35 and I get enthusiastic and super invested, because I get to have a bit of a role in who that person will be. What travel experience is that meaningful? Very, very few.

I have kids and I don’t do any of these. The problem here is you or where you live.

Am I missing the part in OP’s post that specified developing countries? This is weird.

Thanks for this perspective. The next time I’m bored playing with the same set of toys with my baby (which will most likely be tomorrow), I’ll be thinking about this!

We're an inattentive ADHD family and we're never bored. There's so much to think about in our heads. Of course, nothing actually gets done.

The only thing that will cure this kind of boredom is meditation.
