| My LGBTQ son has had straight roommates since freshman year and it has never been an issue. He needed a steer at one point to gay-friendly health care, but otherwise he has easily and happily found his own way. College campuses are by and large gay-friendly, even in red states. |
| The responses in this thread are encouraging (and I don’t have a gay kid, but I still like what it says about our future)! 👍 |

some schools allow you to opt into LGBTQ affinity dorms or floors if that's of interest.

+1 My straight DS was also in such a suite. Multiple relationships of various persuasions during the year. NBD |

I'm currently in college, and my randomly-assigned roommate freshman year is gay. Our only conflicts had to do with conflicting bedtimes.
Being gay is normalized enough among our age group that I didn't think about it all that much, but my school is also in a liberal part of a deep blue state, so YMMV. |

Most schools have questionnaires to fill out for roommate matching, usually the summer before freshman year. They’ll ask whether you yourself are LGBTQ+, and whether you’re comfortable with a roommate who is. Some may ask whether you’re interested in an affinity-group dorm or floor.
So there’s not really a worry about getting matched with someone homophobic. |
