First day of school for 2024-2025 school year?

Winter break to end of school seems much longer than start of school to winter break. Even though second semester starts at the end of Jan it just feels like it’s longer than first semester.

Ending a week earlier in June would make second semester feel not as long. For the AP kids this would give them an extra week of instruction before the exams. Parents have to pay for the same number of weeks for childcare so why does it matter if they pay early June-late Aug or mid June-mid Aug?

I’d much rather have year round school with longer breaks. 6 weeks in the summer is more than enough. For the people that will argue what will people do for childcare with this type of schedule, the childcare providers will adapt. The certainly adapted when Covid hit.

That’s absurd.

A significant number of states start school early or mid-August and get out by Memorial Day. Academically it’s better. Kids really don’t learn much in June, and for high schools, an extra week of instruction before AP/IB testing would make a big difference. I hope they start earlier, and give a four day weekend for Labor Day.

I'm a teacher and agree these long breaks are not great. They are expensive too, as most families have to pay for camp and childcare. I'd rather more frequent breaks during the year and a shorter summer.
.

And what would families do if these breaks are in the middle of the school year? They still have to pay for expensive camps. I’d rather kids not go to school in middle of august, so last week of august works great for us.

Take short less expensive vacations/staycations. Also, most districts will partner with their local county/city to offer less expensive 1-2 so camps. Some year round systems also offer inter session classes/internships.

Why is MCPS spring break so early if they don't get our until June?? Why no February break?

I am used to schools starting near labor day having a later April break to kind of split the difference in the 2nd term

I wish we would go to a year round schedule 2 weeks off every 2-3 months. Maybe a month in the summer and a full 2 weeks at Christmas/Years or a week for Thanksgiving?

Spring break always includes Easter Monday.

Bulk of the country starts before this date, so not absurd.

Only Southern states, and I have no desire to emulate their academics. Even only in calendar.

There’s nothing inherent about the month of June that makes it harder for kids to learn.

Ending earlier will only mean that the end of the year burn out starts in May instead of June.
i imagine possible schedules will be shared this fall, community feedback will show the majority prefer a similar schedule this year and we will continue with a late august start.
I much preferred the post labor day start, both as a teacher and a parent.

My kid’s school starts the Wednesday after Labor Day and ends the first week of June.

Still better since testing is in April/May. No learning happens after that anyway.

Yet another reason to stop the asinine state testing.

Year round only works for some families for elementary school. It very much doesn't work for HS for kids who have to work/summer school. Or, divorced parents where kids spend summers with the other parent.

I'm all for repealing the federal No Child Left Behind Act, which mandates the testing, but something tells me that's not going to happen.
