| I know the MCPS 2024-2025 school year will not be set for quite a while, but was wondering if anyone has any insight on what the most likely first day of school will be. It seems like starting the week before Labor Day is the current trend, so are we most likely looking at August 26, 2024? |
| That’s a logical guess. |
| Most likely, but there are some in the BOE who would prefer a week earlier. That would be the 19th |
That’s absurd. |
| 26th seems most likely. |
Who in the BOE is pushing for that and WHY?? |
A significant number of states start school early or mid-August and get out by Memorial Day. Academically it’s better. Kids really don’t learn much in June, and for high schools, an extra week of instruction before AP/IB testing would make a big difference. I hope they start earlier, and give a four day weekend for Labor Day. |
Kids don’t learn much in June? Lol okay…..the states that do start in early august actually hate it. It’s too hot for recess/PE, etc. The calendar is perfectly fine. |
Beg to differ. Lived in a stated that started early/mid Aug. I MUCh prefer that schedule. We might not have liked starting that early, be we appreciated the breaks and being done by Memorial Day. |
| Usually voted on at the late November Board of Education meeting, so you'll know for sure soon |
I'm a teacher and agree these long breaks are not great. They are expensive too, as most families have to pay for camp and childcare. I'd rather more frequent breaks during the year and a shorter summer. |
. And what would families do if these breaks are in the middle of the school year? They still have to pay for expensive camps. I’d rather kids not go to school in middle of august, so last week of august works great for us. |
June is a circus. Once testing is done in May and Memorial Day hits, everyone is done and it’s like herding kittens. Starting a bit earlier in August would be much better. |
| I wouldn’t put any money down on a Disney cruise, OP. LOL |
Bulk of the country starts before this date, so not absurd. |
