Safe for dorm

Anonymous
Oldest has controlled substance (ADHD meds) and a great laptop, is a rising junior, never had anything stolen (and believe me, there were parties in their dorm suite). Doesn't have a safe, or cash really. Everything is via debit card (carries on the phone) or school ID card. Youngest is a rising sophomore, same thing (different crowd but still parties). No safe for them either.

Both are at urban, big city schools

I would put this under the absolutely unnecessary crap we buy our kids for college list

You don't know who will be in their room, if the roommate will lock the door, etc.

I appreciate this thread, and especially the link to this product. I think this is what we have been looking for to secure the ADHD medicine. This was our final unresolved piece of the puzzle before DD leaves for college in a few weeks. Thanks!

Any suggestions? I’ve seen ones that you can secure to furniture, but I can’t figure out what would be the best place to do that so it’s accessible but not right out in the open.

We did and it was a waste. Just get a large plastic envelope she can tape under her bed or behind her dresser.

Capri pants for women are banned as one example.

They're banned on DCUM, too.

Yes, but I think most thefts from dorm rooms are going to be crimes of opportunity where someone is alone in the room for a moment, snoops, and grabs what they find.
Most people who are going to do that are not going to see what's in the closest, go to Amazon, come back another day, and be left with something they then have to figure out how to open, all for a passport and some Adderall.

Adderall is valuable. Lots of kids have these boxes, so people looking to acquire plan ahead.

It’s just like home security — nothing is fool proof. You’re just trying to make it easier to steal from someone else than from you.

You can pick this one in 5 seconds.

This is what you’re looking for:

We bought this and modified it. We bought a heavier chain to attach it to the bed and put a bicycle type lock through the front with a combination lock. I had to drill holes in it. It's pretty easy to pick this lock and there are videos on line showing how. Kid has expensive medicine and a kid had just been arrested for selling the medicine my kid uses the week before school started.

We got one of those small lock boxes and hid it in a drawer. My son had his ADHD meds and needed a passport for a planned overseas trip.

Exactly. Any obstacle is enough to stop a crime of opportunity. Not some professional.
