Mine does but she's going into 1st grade and close to 7. This time last year (almost 6) she wasn't really. |

This is a sore spot for us. In bed by 7:30 but she stays up reading until 9 or even 10 some nights. I'm so proud of her and I love that she loves reading so much, philosophically I don't want to limit her. But it's late!
Swear I'm not trolling, it's totally an exceptional thing about my kid. She has plenty of other ways in which she is behind on development. But she is a voracious reader. She'll be 7 this fall so she's on the old end of 6. |

Regarding reading, we read to her for about 30 minutes and then she reads on her own. Agree with the PP that the closer they get to 7, the more this is actual reading time. Mine is also entering 1st grade and it is only in the last month or so that I'd say she's sitting in bed and actually just reading to herself the whole time.
But even before her reading advanced to this point, she'd still "read" to herself after we tucked her in. She'd look at her favorite books and retell the story to herself through the pictures or from memory. Then as she gained some words, she might read a page or even a sentence or so here and there, while mostly relying on the pictures. Then she got to the point she could read a whole Elephant & Piggy on her own, and now she's readying longer, more complex books. There was a period of time when she'd come out to us every 5 minutes to ask us how what a word was when she was reading. We decided to allow it because we didn't want to squash the reading bug. It only lasted a month or so, and I think that time helped her build up her reading skills and made her much more independent as a reader. Now when she comes across an unfamiliar word, she sounds it out, makes corrections as make sense of the story, and generally can figure it out on her own. But again, this is very new. All of which is to say, it's a process and it's totally fine if your kid hits these milestones at 7.5 or 8. But you'll be surprised how much can change between turning 6 and turning 7! It's jaw dropping sometimes. |
| Bus pick up is at 6:45 so he gets up at 6. In bed by 7:15, reads with us until ~7:30 then his light stays on until 7:45 for him to read himself. Theres a smart bulb in his bedside lamp that turns off at that time. |
