What to wear for virtual interview for W&M

I'm surprised you would even want your kid to attend a school that you thought needed a coat/tie interview.

What a snob! Like WM and U Richmond or Vassar would have different guidelines. My current WM 2026 DD wore jeans (can’t be seen), a plain colored light t-shirt by Polo (no collar) and a long flowing coordinating cardigan that is very much her personal style. Long hair neat and pulled back. Basically business casual for teens. Agree with PP, she had a ring light for interviews.

Must have worked. She was admitted (and to private colleges, wearing the same basic outfit to interview).

OH stop clutching your pearls! My DD goes to a public VA university. My DS will go to a public VA university in 2 yrs. I went to THREE public universities and DH also went to a public university. I'm not against public universities or speaking pejoratively of them! I'm simply making the point that W&M is PUBLIC and therefore should not be equated with a stuffy, snobby PRIVATE school. I'm envisioning certain private boarding HSs in New England being the "stuffy" type of school that would expect prospective students to wear a "jacket and tie." I cannot imagine a public Virginia university having the same expectation (thank god).

I assume you know the song is about an ex who went to Bard…

This was great until the judgy end. Can we just offer insight without deeming to know and advise others' motives?

I have taught my kids to dress for the occasion. Church, graduation, wedding, school, etc. is different than hanging out with friends in their basement or going to Chipotle for dinner. For a boy, I would put a college interview in the polo and khakis category. This is also what he wears to his private school daily. NBD.

NP. What is a “Bard”?

A bard is a singer/poet, but I am guessing they meant Bard College.

"Harvard or Bust" T-Shirt.

What's the point of a Zoom interview? Doesn't really demonstrate interest in the school and at worst they could say something disqualifying. All downside.

My DD used to do these interviews for WM. She wouldn't care what the kid was wearing as long as it appeared they took the time to present themselves well - ie, comb their hair, wear a clean, unwrinkled shirt, etc.

Are the W&M interviews evaluative? How important are they?

Not very. They're a good way to show demonstrated interest but kids can also do this through campus visits or meeting with campus reps if they come to the high school. My DD was admitted ED with no interview (slots book up very fast and she couldn't get one). She did visit twice, once for a self-guided tour (covid) and once for one of the Fall Focus days.

What do the student interviewers write up about the interview? Standard interview form?

We just canceled a virtual interview for 8/2 in case anyone is looking to register. They are hard to come by.
