What to wear for virtual interview for W&M

Anonymous
My kid has an interview next week and it occurred to me that a tie and possibly a suit jacket might be required. The last time he wore a tie was when he was a ring bearer is a collared knit shirt OK or does he need to step it up?
TIA

Ah hell no- no suit and tie. The interview is with a current senior student. My kid did it his bedroom- not sure if he threw on a polo or not.

That seems unnecessary. It's a public school! Just wear a polo shirt or other button down shirt. They are more interested in what he says, not coat and tie.

I'm surprised you would even want your kid to attend a school that you thought needed a coat/tie interview.

A Steely Dan T-shirt with "My Old School" lyrics.

No expert here, but I feel for W&M neat and clean but relaxed is totally fine.

Polo shirt and a good neutral background. Light in front of him, not behind him. Computer at eye level, put it on some thick books.

As others have said, polo or button down shirt.

My kid went to the in person interview.
I wasnt with him but he probably wore a tshirt. (And that horrifies me a bit thinking about it now).

3 weeks to go before he moves in.

Well since it is virtual, pants are not required. 😂

My daughter wore her Taylor Swift concert tee. It actually led to great conversations.

No pants necessary.

I think you should allow the kid to express his individuality through the way he presents himself. But as a parent I would give him some parameters, such as somewhere between royal wedding formal and Hunter Biden waking up after a rough weekend.

What a snob! Like WM and U Richmond or Vassar would have different guidelines. My current WM 2026 DD wore jeans (can’t be seen), a plain colored light t-shirt by Polo (no collar) and a long flowing coordinating cardigan that is very much her personal style. Long hair neat and pulled back. Basically business casual for teens. Agree with PP, she had a ring light for interviews.

Must have worked. She was admitted (and to private colleges, wearing the same basic outfit to interview).

DP, I actually read the post a bit different. With the underlined part it read to more that, unlike privates, they are less focused on appearances but more on substance. Which to me is a positive thing.

But then she interviewed for W&L in just a nice T-shirt and got in too.
