Virginia ev highway use fee outrageous

Tell me again how good your EV is for the environment

Car cargoship Fremantle Highway caught fire last night in the North Sea, off the Dutch coast, 1 crew dead, all others lifted, many injured.

Apparently it was caused by a Li-On battery of an EV on board.

The fire continues, the vessel is listing heavily and might capsize, which would mean an environmental catastrophe for a very unique landscape.

f off and pay the fee. you are still coming out ahead as others have mentioned...

Thank you for being the voice of reason.

What time period is the $130 over?

A year? So $11 a month to drive on the roads?
Even a quarter? $43/month to drive on the roads? $500 seems very reasonable charge to drive your several thousand pound machine on the roads.

So your solution is to pull even more funding?

Gas tax should be abolished and funding for roads should be based on mileage and weight. Since VA already has a required yearly inspection, this info could be captured at that time. Gas tax was a decent proxy for mileage and weight (since heavier vehicles use more gas), but now that we'll have 10K pound electric hummers destroying the roads, we need something else that applies to all vehicles.

Helping the environment?!
You mean all the toxic battery elements mined overseas then shipped here?
Then your batteries being charged by coal burning power plants?
Then these same batteries buried in land fills poisoning the land?
Yeah OK. Fool.

Virginia DMV has a "Mileage choice" program that is exactly part of a transition to this. Our DOT is doing a good job being pretty progressive (and long-sighted) about transportation funding compared to the majority of other states.

How? If I commute to MD or DC five days a week, how does VA allot my mileage

+1
We drive an EV and a PHEV. Almost all of our driving is done on electric. We don't mind paying our fair share in fees/taxes that go towards roads. We drive each car ~6k miles a year, so the VA fee is many times greater than what we would be paying in state gas tax over a year. That's the main reason we signed up for VA's Mileage Choice program. We still pay the fee (tax), but it is adjusted based on our miles driven.

BTW, any car that averages 25mpg or better pays some amount of the extra VA fee.

VA residents pay VA, MD resident pay MD.
