You do need a reservation, and they are difficult to get at sunrise. And, there's only a billion other places to watch the sunrise. Don't stress out about it. Acadia is gorgeous and anywhere you go will be stunning

We just hiked up Cadillac last weekend with our kids, it was fantastic. We did not make it up for sunrise, but the daytime hike there and back was really delightful and not terribly strenuous. Probably 6 miles round trip. Our younger one is 4.
