I cannot believe there are still people out there spanking their children...

I cant believe that in this day and age when we know so much about the brain, people are willing to basically give their kids a lifelong sexual fetish by doing this! Why do they think it’s potentially arousing for adults but not children?

Studies show the excitement and fear combined with stimulation in that area potentially triggers aggression, a sexual response and future interest in s&m, even though of course that isn’t the parents’ intention. I’m sure it doesn’t happen the majority of the time but it’s very, very common. Poor kids.

Illegal in many countries now. As usual US won’t act to protect children

This is so Freudian and outdated. You can not “give” someone a fetish any more than you can make him gay by letting him play dress up.

It’s illegal like speeding is illegal. It’s understood that you don’t take it too far.

that people admit to doing to them in polite society?

I saw a woman slap a child across the face on a bus. Presumably her child. Yes, people do horrible things to children in public and feel zero shame.

I mean…it’s an anonymous forum. The person isn’t exactly posting it on Facebook. That being said, there’s also a world of difference between a quick whap on the butt and actual child abuse.

When it’s used judiciously and correctly, not in anger, etc., it’s very effective. It means that you can spend a lot less time and energy disciplining overall, and actually enjoy more time with your kids.

Spanking teaches kids that they can get someone to do what they want by hitting them.

Taking away a toy, timeout, leaving the playground, revoking TV teaches kids that they can get someone to do what they want by taking their stuff, confining them to a chair or step, taking them from something they want to do, or preventing them from watching a show.

Not the same and you know it.

Yeah maybe choose a consequence that isn’t also a form of foreplay…

At our child’s preschool we had to fill out a form about how we discipline our child. I pray it was to weed out all these disciplinarian psychos who probably still believe in child marriage.

They’re all punishments.
