OP, be grateful for finding out about their OCD and strictness. Now you know that you should never say yes to a "sleepover at grandma and grandpa's" when your child is older. No way I would subject my child to that sort of tense, inhospitable environment. |
Please don’t overreact like most of the responders. Sounds like they have an annoying habit. How are they otherwise? |
+1 OCD |
I understand you're annoyed, but this is ridiculous. Acting like a toddler won't make anything better. |
Sounds like OCD, but why not get a fresh glass each time you want some water? Then they will see the error of their ways once the dishwasher is full of 20 glasses. |
Just drink your water, let them clean the cup then get a new one the next time you're thirsty. No need to keep glasses of water half drunk all over the house. Nobody is cutting the water off they are just cleaning up after you. |
Is this your first time visiting their home? Is this a new habit of theirs? |
Is there a way you can gently ask them to not waltz into the guest room? And just keep the water there? |
+1 I'd leave. |
Ime the older generation doesn’t understand the constant need to drink water. I swear some of my family are really camels. 8 8oz glasses of water a day was a recommendation within the last 2ish decades and I think has been debunked.
Normally I’d say that they view you having a glass of water out as leaving a mess. But that doesn’t explain the water bottle. That just seems vindictive because it’s not in their line of site and it’s not like they are missing a glass that needs to be washed. |
My parents are like this.
They hate leaving stuff out, particularly things that can go bad, attract insects, or liquids that can spill, even water. My husband has pseudogout and is always drinking water throughout the day. My parents used to get all antsy at the sight of his glass. It took some years for them to accept this state of affairs. Your husband should be defending you. |

My mother does this, usually with my coffee cup. Take a sip, set it down, three seconds later she's washing it in the sink, with soap, and then putting it in the dishwasher. She's a neat freak and a control freak and having people in her house really drives her crazy.
I think the message here, OP, is don't stay with them. MIL clearly does not want you there. |
Needing to constantly drink water isn't good. Could be a sign of diabetes. Or in OPs case gestational diabetes. |
Seriously? You would destroy the relationship over this? I mean, it sounds annoying, but I wouldn’t go that far |
