MCPS joins PGPS and other school districts nationwide in lawsuit across social media companies

What exactly does joining a lawsuit entail? Are we contributing towards the legal fees?

I’m no fan of social media. I do think it can be bad for children. Unfortunately, there are lots of things that are bad for children. MCPS has enough difficulty educating children, I don’t think it can spare resources to become a social crusader.

The "social crusading" is directly related to the education of children.

+1 So many TikTok 'challenges' significantly disrupt the education day. Does anyone remember the one early last year when kids were taking the soap dispensers out of the bathrooms and stealing other items from schools? I think my DS told me some kids tried to steal the vending machine (or did) to post on TikTik. We never had to deal with this when we were in school (or at least I did not - graduated in the late 90s). This is uncharted territory. I'm glad MCPS is standing up.

We have crappy admin who are scared to discipline students who act like criminals. It must be the social media. Let's sue them! Good plan. Some one should sue mcps for bullying teachers to fudge grades and data and then firing them.

Give it up. You didn't cut it as a teacher - and that's in a system that's scrambling for teachers. Self-reflect a little.

OP do you work for MCPS? Or some related educational organization? Just wondering why you post so many news stories using the exact same format each time.

People in the public will wonder why so many teacher are leaving the profession. I personally believe that the public should know why teachers find the profession unsustainable and toxic. Why do you think it is so important to disregard the teaching professionals who tell you exactly why there is a shortage. Do you think behavior and unsustainable demands on teachers is a joke. We were never trained to make up data out of thin air. Is this a value of yours? Do you think this is more important than data that reflects whats really going on?

Even if kids don't have access to phones and devices in schools, they'll just go home and use them. I think this lawsuit is about SM being accountable for causing mental harm to kids; and the kids bring those issues to the schools which ultimately impact their learning. I agree with the lawsuit. There needs to be regulations in place to protect kids from content that impact their well being.

Kids are getting violent and crazy when you say no to the phone. Teachers can get hurt when that happens. At the very least their lessons are disrupted every day. It bec I mes even more of a problem when principals blame the teacher as they have no discipline or recourse when the kids start fighting, cussing , and and ruining the teachers educational plans. The big deal is that admin writes bad reviews about how in effective teachers are even though the kids are so bad because they know the dmin will just give them candy when they fight and cuss ar their teachers. Also, if you bring the issue up you might be fired by your admin blaming you as the problem because you had the guts to document infractions or open your blabber mouth as a teacher.

That has nothing to do with social media. That is discipline at home and school.
