Frantz Law Group announces that the Montgomery County Public School District joined 500 school districts nationwide in a lawsuit filed in Federal District Court in San Francisco against Meta, TikTok, Snap, YouTube, and other social media companies. In the lawsuit the plaintiff school districts allege that these companies are knowingly causing emotional harm to children through their platforms.

With over 160,550 students in 210 schools, the Montgomery County Public School District is the largest school district in the state of Maryland. The lawsuit alleges that various social media companies have caused a mental and emotional health crisis marked by higher proportions of anxiety, depression, thoughts of self-harm, body dissatisfaction, disordered eating behaviors, and low self-esteem among children and students. Many are further subjected to often harmful, exploitative and addictive content that encourages disorderly behavior, unhealthy social comparison, and cyberbullying. This litigation seeks to provide the funding and staffing resources needed to mitigate the damage that school districts are currently encountering.

Good for MCPS! It's time we all held social media companies accounting for the harm their platforms and algorithms have unleashed on our youth.

Absurd.

If MCPS would actually enforce school phone policies instead of just passing the buck to teachers, I could support them. So many kids are addicted to their devices and can flip out if they are confiscated.

How does MCPS enforce phone policies without involving teachers?

Or, parents could parent.

Honestly, this is incredible. After all the BS TikTok challenges in the schools (and cars - I have one of the Kias) I say GOOD! There needs to be more regulation. I don't know who here is old enough to remember when the internet just started off and there was little to no regulation. And there was that one guy who put up a revenge porn website and it was TOTALLY LEGAL to keep it up (of course until it wasn't). You should watch the documentary series "The Most Hated Man on the Internet" Crazy scary.

This is the updated version of that. These companies need to be put in check. This is bigger than MCPS, teachers, parents, all of us.

They should sue the phone software manufacturers instead. Any social media evil can pop up at any time. It's the phones who only provide limited means of parental control, which kids can easily get around

Mcps can start by banning phone usage in schools.

+10000. This is a parenting issue. If you don’t want your kids in SM, then don’t allow it.

Well, many don’t parent so schools have to figure out a way to deal with the issue.

Mcps gives teachers bad performance reviews sighting poor management when students can't get off their phones. Some teachers are fired when they try to control phones. They are considered bad classroom managers. This allows admin to place blame and fire the set teacher who can't control phones.

What does "hold social media companies accountable" consist of, in your mind?

Better government regulation, which forces social media companies to enforce its age restrictions (no users under 13), adjust its algorithms to limit disinformation and/or anonymous bad actors from preying on children and overall, much more specific and effective government oversight and regulation along the lines of what is in place for radio and TV.

+1 Regulation ≠ Censorship

Right now, this free for all is an incredible safety issue. People are getting hurt, injured, killed, attacked, preyed upon, etc. Just look at all these people posting 'prank' videos that end up causing actual harm. Bullying is allowed to run rampant. This should not be ok! Just because you post something online, people seem to have this idea that it is ok to do illegal things, just because 'Oh I'm filming a video!" Nope! It needs to be shut down.
