Giving notice on a Monday?

It sounds like you work for/are hired by shit companies. Literally every job I've had since my first one has been a job I've been recruited into by a former colleague, so the idea of a job offer being pulled out from under me with less than two weeks notice is highly unlikely when a company has put this much work into recruiting me, LOL.


I work for good companies. Let me line up my last job move. At old company I had four personal days in bank that are use it or lose it if you quit and cant take them in notice period. I took them week before my start date. Could not do that if gave notice

My old company any new stock grants even if still employed can’t get in notice period.

My old company if lays offs with severance coming can’t get them during severance period.

New job medical benefits don’t start till 1st of following month.

New job 401k match does not start till 1st of second month of employment.

It seems giving two weeks notice and having a break between jobs puts a massive risk to me. Better to overlap. Even if one day.

Companies need to stop this nonsense. I don’t need to pay one months cobra, lose 1-2 months 401k matches and risk offer rescinded to give two weeks notice to a firm who never gives two weeks notice to their own employees.

It is an outdated concept.

No you’ve worked for sh!t companies. I gave notice as soon as I got my offer letter. Per previous employer’s request I stayed to the end of the pay period, transitioned everything smoothly to my team. Took a week off. Started new job. Old job covered me to the end of the month for medical. New company picked up without a gap in coverage. Old employer told me that if my new job didn’t work out for any reason he’d be happy to have me back and would give me a raise. New job is going great so far. And unless someone was getting fired for a really egregious issue, everywhere I’ve worked gives folks some time to find something new when they’re letting them go.

Op here-

Did it this morning. Had our weekly team meeting, pulled boss to the side to grab coffee.


He didn’t take it well. Asked what he can do to keep me for a month until he finds a replacement.

So did you give a 2 week notice or a 24 hr notice (no wonder "he didn't take it well"; what did you expect?).

No, it's not an outdated concept. The idea of having a transition time is perfectly normal, and it's odd to believe that you have to eliminate any tiny little bit of risk.

2 week. He’s repeatedly told me I’m the top performer in the dept, losing your top player isn’t easy.
