Summer League Swim Time Trials Impact - Air Quality

Team rep here. We’re hoping to be able to hold time trials as scheduled on Saturday.

I think this how most (if not all) all are proceeding. The forecast indicates code orange on Saturday so unless it change to red, our team will proceed.

Today is 249 - Very Unhealthy. Saturday is 95 - Moderate so it shouldn’t be an issue.

And it’s not 249 now. It’s like 172. Things improve and should be decent on Saturday.

Time trials aren't that important. Coaches can estimate and then use times from the first meet.

This isn't the Olympics.

Just have your kid wear a mask while doing their event--they'll be fine.

+1. Team rep and we spent yesterday planning for both eventualities, that time trials will go as planned which is the likely occurrence and back up options if it's Code Red when we all wake up in the morning.

Air quality is much improved today. Tomorrow's forecast looks good too. Should alleviate a lot of angst and facilitate a return to normality.

If your pool held practice on June 5th or 6th, they can hold practice today and should have few reservations about time trials tomorrow. See hourly and weekly trends here: https://www.airnow.gov/?city=Alexandria&state=VA&country=USA

When a team doesn't hold time trials, it's so obnoxious. There are only 5 regular meets, and the first one is completely screwed up by the coach's "estimating."

Does water quality gets impacted too? Some aerosols may be inhaled at practice.

I think this is highlighting the difference between upper level divisions and lower divisions. Lower divisions often are struggling to get 6 legal swimmers to fill the lanes. So the coach's estimation ends up being the difference between who gets put in lane 3 vs lane 5- not a big deal both kids swim. OTOH, if you have 30 kids competing for those 6 a meet spots- and several of them have times within tenths of a second of each other- you really need the formality of time trials and a ladder to say who swims.

The odds of more than 2 kids on the same team being within tenths of second and also being far enough up the ladder to be concerned about A meets are almost zero. Consider as an example: https://www.mynvsl.com/leaders?post=1&mt=0&ag...&division=1&team=271
