It's at Wegmans. I sometimes use Dominican frying cheese from Hmart or queso fresco from Aldi instead. If you use queso fresco or make it at home, you can't pan-fry it, at least I've never done so successfully, just add it into your dish at the end. |
In a pinch I made a palak paneer version with tofu instead of paneer and some of my family members preferred it. |
Yes, it keeps very well. Cube it and freeze it. I sometimes deep fry the cubes and then freeze it. |
I make mine at home with whole milk and fresh lemon juice.
Frozen cubed paneer can be soaked in hot salted water with a pinch of turmeric for 10 minutes in it to make it soft and give it a nice color, before using in a savory dish. |
Thank you for this! I've bought it a few times from an Indian grocery store but the texture seems wrong. |

Ditto! How hot should the water be for soaking paneer? |
Ah interesting. I make my own because my experience with store bought was so horrible I ended up throwing out the saag too. Anyway it’s incredibly fast and easy to make with a nut milk sack. |
I I just run the tap water till it gets really hot. It doesn’t have to be boiling. |
Go to any number of the Indian groceries along Langston Blvd. Minerva Express, India A-1, Asia Halal, etc. |
Isn’t tofu estrogenic? I avoid using it for this reason |
I might not serve tofu daily, but a serving in a spinach dish once a week seems fine. The research on soy effects is mixed, with some studies showing possible benefits against cancer: https://www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritionsource/soy/ |
Not to go off the rails here but I recently made my own "lentil tofu" and it was delish. |
