Carriers are in talks to give the 988 hotline your location the same way they give 911 operators your location: using cell towers |
Exactly. OP, all you have to do is refrain from stating that you plan to seriously harm yourself or someone else, as in loss of life or limb. Making bad decisions or unhealthy ones like abusing substances, cutting, etc., is not the problem -- stating that you intend to kill yourself or someone else (or grievously injure yourself or another in a way you can't recover from) IS the problem that causes police to get involved. And if you can't talk to someone for a few minutes without expressing the desire to commit suicide or homicide, then that few minutes of discussion isn't really going to help you anyway, is it? Stay safe. Take care of yourself. And also don't place that particular burden of expressing suicidality or homicidality on someone else without expecting them to take it seriously. they are important, too, just like you. Really. You are important. If you are talking about committing serious harm, then everyone involved in that conversation has to stay safe and act accordingly. Best wishes. |
The main problem is, if you are about to harn yourself or already set something in motion to harm yourself, you should be able to call a crisis line and get medical help, with a cop coming and killing you to "eliminate the threat" (and ideally without being involuntarily committed to a psychiatric hospital) |

My friend, if you are actively homicidal or suicidal, there is no safe help that can be offered over the phone in a few minutes of time.
If you are suicidal or homicidal -- actually suicidal or homicidal, as in making plans -- the only safe thing is to make sure you are kept safe, despite your desire not to be safe. I'm sorry it is that way, but it is. People have to treat expressions of wanting to kill or severely harm yourself (or others) as true expressions of intent. 1. If that is your intent, then you are not safe. 2. If that is not your intent, then express the pain in different language, and people can try to help you. That's it. There really isn't an alternative. |
A hotline does not provide medical help. If you have already taken pills or injured yourself, a hospital is the resource you need to call. If you are having thoughts of harming yourself and want help fighting them to stay safe, or have intent that you want to resist, then a hotline is the appropriate resource. |
